A new five-story Patient Tower, as well as numerous expansions and renovations, are taking shape at St. Joseph’s Medical Center. But what we don't see are the dozens of interconnected systems, expedited schedule, and teams coordinating across disciplines to bring this new vision for patient care to life.
Every project has stories that unfold long before the finished facility opens its doors. P2S’s new Ongoing Project Spotlight series follows that journey in real time, with our Project Managers offering an inside look on what’s happening behind the drawings and documentation.
First up, we asked Project Managers Jamie O'Bard and Shane Russell to share their unique perspectives on this significant ongoing healthcare project:
⚙️What are the goals and impact of this ongoing project?
St. Joseph’s Medical Center (SJMC) is undertaking a significant campus expansion to increase capacity and enhance patient care services. The project includes a new five-story Patient Tower that will replace the existing Main Hospital building and accommodate a new Emergency Department (ED), additional operating rooms (ORs), intensive care units (ICUs), medical-surgical patient care units, and a new sterile processing department (SPD). The expansion also encompasses new rooftop mechanical, plumbing, and medical gas systems, as well as a generator yard, administration support building, and parking structure. In addition, renovations are being completed throughout the existing hospital, including upgrades to the respiratory therapy suite and the addition of a new dietary dock. The project also addresses California seismic compliance requirements for existing healthcare facilities while expanding the number of patient beds available to serve the Stockton community.
⚙️What is the project's current status?
Our team is currently mid-design, providing Mechanical, Electrical, Plumbing, Lighting, Technology, Security, Nurse Call, and Fire Alarm design. Design completion is targeted for mid-2027, with construction on this project slated to complete by 2029.
⚙️What is one ongoing challenge and our solution?
The SJMC Hospital Expansion project is set to be complete within five years. This expedited schedule for the multiple projects within this program has required us to add resources and intensify early coordination and communication with the broader design team, owner, and authorities having jurisdiction to ensure all system components are thoroughly designed and properly integrated.
