The rush to scale AI infrastructure has forced many to reconsider everything from chips to liquid cooling loops. Yet the final line of defense - backup engine starting - was frequently left as an afterthought. But not anymore.

Packaged engine starting and backup power systems move integration headaches off the job site and into a controlled factory environment. If you are heading to Orlando for the 7x24 Exchange International 2026 Spring Conference, let’s look at the math behind this shift.

Kaizen doesn't happen in a conference room. It happens on the floor, in the moment, with the people doing the work. That's exactly where our team spent our quarterly Kaizen event: out on the line, tackling the physical friction points of our expansion to a new facility head-on.

Moving materials between buildings is a heavy logistical puzzle. We went straight to the source, remapping warehouse locations and streamlining kitting to ensure parts move seamlessly from the storeroom to the production line.

Kaizen is a Japanese term that can be roughly translated as “continuous improvement,” and is the method that forms the core of our lean manufacturing culture.

The 8Z and 8R lines are getting the biggest overhaul during this transition. We are rebalancing the workflow and overhauling battery handling ergonomics to increase capacity while making the actual labor safer for the team.

Davy Schick, our Manufacturing Engineering Director, who is also a fan of Kaizen principles, keeps the focus on the people doing the work:

"Ultimately the goal is also to make things easier for our operators too. By making things easier we also improve safety, quality, customer OTD, efficiency, profitability, and much more."

We spend millions optimizing data center server racks for high-density AI workloads, only to trust the uptime of the entire facility to a loose-piece starting system. This is a major vulnerability in infrastructure design.

In a recent article, our CCO, Olen Scott breaks down how shifting from loose-piece construction to factory-tested, integrated starting systems removes this field risk, ensuring the backup power actually functions when a critical workload drops.

This is how "heading to the office" sometimes looks like for our crew on the ground. Cassten Everidge and Tony Crandall got a heavy dose of engine starting in Texas, putting a Waukesha natural gas engine through its paces with the SuperTorque® 8R rack system.

Our guys for the job know: reliability is a math problem we solve with layers. This 8R was kitted with 4x SuperTorque 8Zs, our Best Battery Selector (BBS), and the BCS-120 control system.

Large engines can be started with just two 8Zs, but we installed four for 100% redundancy. If one side of the system is compromised, the other still delivers the full velocity needed to get that generator online.

Proving that the starting system is as resilient as the facility it protects is why we build for the worst-case scenario.

90 feet under Kansas City, carved into bedrock: what a place for a technical briefing by Richard Hutchins.

Last Friday, Richard took the stage and showed the 7x24 Exchange International Midwest team the technical and ethical realities of today's data center infrastructure.

The feedback from the room was direct:

"I thought batteries were just batteries... I learned a lot."

"I never knew how sensitive some battery technologies could be to long term storage during delays in construction, and that newer technologies can essentially solve those problems."

"I thought you guys just did genset chargers; I had no idea you were all over the SWGR too."

The overall conversation explored the math of building new power plants without hitting ratepayers and using closed-loop cooling to cut water footprints. Thanks for this great day of networking in the KC underground!

Critical infrastructure applications like switchgear control and back-up power require multiple levels of redundancy. However, that can make system design, sourcing and installation unnecessarily complicated.

We engineered the PowerCab 2 to eliminate the complexity, integrating everything you need for a reliable, redundant DC power system in a single unit with a single part number.

The platform supports T&D requirements including N+1/dual-bus architectures, harsh outdoor environments, and utility-grade standards - packaged and tested in the factory for drop-in installation that just works.

What a week in Chicago. ⚾ Last night, the Cubs walked it off in extra innings and that's the kind of resilience we think about every day in critical power.

We hosted peers from across the power industry at the Wrigley Rooftops, and the conversations were just as energizing as the win. Three themes kept coming up: data center growth, battery storage, and lead times that make every sourcing decision critical.

Sourcing components from multiple vendors and assembling them in the field is now a high-risk model. Factory-integrated systems, on the other hand, enable fast, reliable deployment at scale.

Visiting IEEE PES T&D Conference? Stop by Booth 3670.

Our critical power experts will gladly explain how packaged power is helping customers profit from streamlined installation, reduced maintenance costs and unmatched reliability.
