The Hidden Risks of Self-Cleaning Your Electric Range: A Cautionary Tale

Your oven is an essential appliance in your kitchen, and it's no wonder that you rely on it to prepare delicious meals for your family. However, did you know that using the self-clean feature on your electric range could potentially lead to a significant component failure? In this blog post, we'll shed light on a specific issue that can arise from self-cleaning and provide helpful insights to ensure the longevity of your oven.

Understanding the Self-Clean Feature:
The self-clean feature is a convenient function available on many electric ranges, including LG models. It uses high heat to burn off food residue and grease, leaving your oven sparkling clean. While this feature may seem like a time-saving solution, it's essential to be aware of the potential consequences.

The High Limit Thermostat Failure:
One common issue that can occur after running the self-clean cycle is a high limit thermostat failure. The high limit thermostat is a safety device designed to monitor and regulate the oven's temperature. During self-cleaning, the extreme temperatures can put excessive stress on the thermostat, leading to its malfunction.

Symptoms and Consequences:
When the high limit thermostat fails, you may notice that your electric range experiences a complete loss of heat or power. The oven will fail to reach the desired temperature, resulting in no heat at all. This can be frustrating and inconvenient, as it renders the oven unusable for cooking or baking. Ignoring this issue can lead to further damage to other oven components, ultimately requiring costly repairs or even a full replacement.

Preventive Measures:
While it's important to be cautious when using the self-clean feature, you don't necessarily have to avoid it entirely. Here are some preventive measures to minimize the risk of high limit thermostat failure:

1. Limit the frequency: Avoid running the self-clean cycle too frequently, as it increases the strain on the oven components. Use it only when necessary.

2. Regular maintenance: Keep your oven clean by manually wiping away spills and residue after each use. This reduces the need for frequent self-cleaning.

3. Pre-cleaning: Before initiating the self-clean cycle, manually remove large food particles and grease, which can help reduce the workload on the oven during the cleaning process.

4. Provide proper ventilation: To prevent excessive heat buildup, consider sliding out your electric range from the wall by about 6 inches. This extra space allows for better air circulation around the appliance, reducing the strain on internal components during the self-clean cycle.

5. Open the drawer under the oven: Many electric ranges have a storage drawer located beneath the oven. Opening this drawer by about 6 inches while using the self-clean feature can help facilitate better airflow and cooling. This simple step can aid in dissipating heat and minimizing the risk of component failure.

Remember, it's always advisable to consult your oven's user manual or reach out to the manufacturer for specific guidelines on ventilation requirements and proper usage of the self-clean feature.

Conclusion:
While the self-clean feature on your electric range can be a handy tool, it's important to be aware of the potential risks associated with its use. By understanding the high limit thermostat failure issue and implementing preventive measures, such as limiting the frequency of self-cleaning, performing regular maintenance, and providing proper ventilation, you can ensure the longevity and reliable performance of your oven.
