"Good intentions don't equal good inventions."

In the latest episode of The Curious Nail, Pierre Paul and Jenessa Carder talk about early mistakes our team made and how we came to realize that good intentions can still miss the mark if the people impacted aren't part of the process.

When you only use your perspective to decide what you think others are or aren't capable of, you miss the lived experiences of the people you're aiming to serve.

Pierre reminds us, "Accessibility removes barriers. Inclusivity is what happens after - when someone is not just able to get in the room, but is truly welcomed there."

This October, we recognize National Disability Employment Awareness Month (NDEAM) and its 2026 theme: “Celebrating Value and Talent.”

At We Hear You, we believe accessibility shouldn't stop at the front door. Celebrating value and talent means creating workplaces where people with disabilities have the access they need to belong, contribute, grow, and succeed.

An inaccessible workplace can look like heavy internal doors, inaccessible restrooms, software that doesn't work with screen readers, meetings without captions or interpreters, overwhelming noise or lighting, or complicated accommodation processes. These barriers can affect independence, dignity, belonging, and someone's ability to fully participate at work.

This NDEAM, ask yourself:

Is our workplace designed so employees with disabilities can contribute their value and talent as independently and equitably as everyone else?

Here are a few ways to take action:

• Assess accessibility throughout the entire workplace (Not just entrances!)
• Evaluate digital accessibility and workplace technology.
• Provide captions, interpreters, accessible materials, and multiple ways to participate.
• Consider sensory accessibility and lower-sensory options.
• Make the accommodation process clear, simple, and responsive.
• Look for barriers in hiring, onboarding, orientation, and training.
• Train managers on disability inclusion, accommodations, and accessible communication.
• Remember that not every disability or accommodation need is visible.
• Ask employees with disabilities about the barriers they experience rather than making assumptions.
• Use the Job Accommodation Network (JAN) for free, confidential guidance on workplace accommodations.

Most importantly, make accessibility part of everyday operations—not something that only receives attention during October.

NDEAM is a starting point for action. Identify one or two barriers your organization can address now, and keep improving throughout the year.

We’re excited to attend the Starkloff Disability () Employment Summit on October 7–8, 2026, hosted at World Wide Technology’s headquarters!

We’ll be demonstrating the Hero on select bathroom doors at World Wide Technology (), giving attendees the opportunity to experience our technology in a real-world environment and see how simple accessibility can be.

The summit brings together companies and disability advocates focused on creating more accessible and inclusive workplaces, and we’re excited to be part of that conversation.
