Great comparison demo of a Wizard Hell Razor and Hellion III by Peter Carlsen. I get a lot of inquiries as to how they compare.

Btw, I have a lot of respect for Wizard amps. Amazingly well-built and huge sounding.

KT77 vs 6CA7 in the new Hellion III.

Tough choice on which is best. It’s really all preference.

77’s are bigger and punchier with more midrange and extended highs. 6CA7’s are more scooped and smoother on the top end. Both are great. The low end is actually pretty similar between the two.

KT77 on left. 6CA7 on right. Same riffs played twice. First one i...

Now that the dust has settled and all the Hellion III’s are en route to their new owners, it’s time to switch gears a bit.

Here’s a little pile of Marshall history. 3 original Jose Arredondo modded amps. Going to get some checkups and let them stretch their legs a bit to keep them up and running.

Top to bottom:

71’ Super lead with loop

74’ Super bass no loop

71’ Super lead with loop

All are the 3 in 1 mod. And all 3 have the extra stage gain pot on back. It was an option to put it in front or back, at customer request, when Jose did the mods.

Presence controls are on back and the MV is in place of the original presence pot on front.

Thanks to everyone who grabbed an amp. They went super fast!

Here’s some additional pictures of the Hellion III and some more details.

Amp is 100w with KT77 power tubes and 5 12ax7’s.

What’s new for this version:

All new design stainless chassis, new PCB design, new head shell and aesthetics. Metal see-thru front and rear grill plates. All new brushed aluminum, anodized face plates. Everything is higher-end.

All switches on front panel. Ultra Tight moved from back to front. All switches have hidden mounting with no exposed nuts.

3 channels:

ULTRAPLEX- a killer plexi-type channel that actually sounds like a cranked plexi at any volume. And solves the age long problem of not being able to have a fx loop with a plexi with a master volume.

This channel has a full EQ, 3 way bright switch, it’s own master and gain controls AND it’s own compressed/ raw control to dial in the perfect feel and response.

Dial in cleans or full cranked plexi. This channel could be its own amp. You can dial in cleans, pushed SRV with grit, or EVH type tones.

GZ-OD - The classic Hellion high gain channel, re-voiced for improved feel, more transparency, and more low end. This amp PUNCHES hard. Lots of options for tweaking in your perfect sound.

This channel also has its own master and gain controls as well as the full compliment of GZ EQ shaping.

HELLFIRE- Lead channel that now has its own master and gain control. Re-voiced for more harmonic content and singing leads. Sustain for days while staying tight and responsive.

All 3 channels have their own masters and gains. And there is a global system master on front that controls all 3 channel levels simultaneously.

LED’s are positioned next to each master for easy location in dark environments.

New foot switch design has LED’s for all 3 channels and mirrors the LED’s on front panel when activated.

All in all, a major update to the Hellion lineage!

It’s been an extremely busy year. New design, production sourcing, hundreds of hours of testing and R&D. All coming together now.

I’ll post more details this week. I’ve got a shelf filled with amps, but most are already spoken for. Behind the scenes chatter created demand before the announcement. But rest assured more will be built soon…

Here’s what’s on the bench today. A JMP 2203 5GS Sniper+ with clean channel. 5th stage and clean are both foot switchable. Still in process, but turning out nice and tidy.

This customer wanted additional gain cut options made foot switchable, so a second jack and a couple more relays were added.

Needless to say, this one is a lot of work, but it’ll be a killer piece when it’s ready to go. I made judicious use of the Gound Zero PCB boards to make it all happen. Takes quite a bit of pre-planning to make sure things go smoothly.

Up to about 45 holes drilled so far. For the inevitable Marshall guy that will be offended by this…
