Privacy doesn't have to come at the expense of openness.

At the Stanwood Residence, the façade was designed to carefully balance privacy, natural light, and connection to the outdoors. A weathering steel screen wraps the upper level, filtering views while allowing daylight to pass through. The screen was precisely angled to provide privacy from the opposing neighbors while preserving sweeping city views of Miracle Mile and beyond.

Inspired by Japanese architectural principles, the vertical rhythm softens the building's presence and creates a dynamic façade that changes throughout the day as light and shadow move across its surface.

Below, expansive glazing opens the interior to the landscape, creating a balance between openness and privacy that defines the home's architectural character.

THE STORY OF DOÑA MARÍA. Chapter Two: The Hillside That Changed Everything

One landslide changed everything.

What began as a hillside stabilization project quickly revealed larger challenges beneath the surface. Years of improper grading had directed water toward the home, compromising both the landscape and the long-term performance of the property.

Rather than treating these as isolated issues, every aspect of the site was reconsidered from grading and drainage to circulation and landscape design. Before beautiful outdoor spaces could be created, the land itself had to be reimagined.

Next week, we'll explore how one of the project's greatest engineering challenges became its defining architectural feature.

Movement is one of architecture's most overlooked experiences.

At Stanwood, the staircase was designed as more than a connection between levels, it became an opportunity to shape how the home is experienced.
A continuous bamboo stair, concealed linear lighting, and a restrained material palette work together to create a calm transition through the home.

Rather than relying on decorative elements, the design uses proportion, light, and repetition to guide movement and establish a quiet architectural rhythm.

It's a reminder that some of the most impactful spaces are the ones we move through every day.

THE STORY OF DOÑA MARÍA. Chapter One: A Home Worth Saving

Some projects begin with a design brief. Others begin with a responsibility.
Originally designed and built in the 1950s by the homeowner's husband, Doña Maria is more than a house—it is a place shaped by decades of family history, memories, and everyday life.

When a landslide threatened the property, and years of site challenges began compromising the home's long-term performance, the objective was never simply to repair what had failed. It was to protect everything the home already represented.

Every design decision balanced preservation with performance—strengthening the property while respecting the architecture, craftsmanship, and character that had defined it for generations.
Because the best renovations don't erase a home's history. They allow it to continue.

Over the next five weeks, we'll share the story behind Doña Maria and the many layers of design, engineering, and craftsmanship that transformed this remarkable Los Angeles residence.

Follow along as we continue sharing the story behind Doña Maria.

Can 208 square feet redefine luxury?

This is what happens when a primary bathroom becomes a fully integrated wellness environment. Designed within just 208 square feet, this Los Angeles bathroom remodel transforms spatial limits into a highly orchestrated luxury experience—where architecture, technology, and material all work as one.

A cascading zellige wet wall introduces movement and sound. A structural glass floor reveals illuminated water below. Skylights draw in natural light while greenery extends through the space, softening every transition.
Separate his and hers environments allow for distinct material expressions—stone, marble, and cedar—while advanced systems like a recirculating shower, steam room, infrared sauna, and integrated lighting redefine what a modern bathroom can deliver.

This is luxury bathroom design at its most considered where every detail supports the experience of daily ritual. At Archetype Design Collective, our approach combines architecture, interiors, and advanced digital workflows to deliver high-performance residential spaces with clarity and control from concept through completion.

Can a single material change the way a home feels?

At the Newport Beach Residence, the answer lies in the details. A once-standard handrail was transformed through the introduction of hand-wrapped Italian leather, adding warmth, texture, and a tactile quality that invites interaction. Rather than relying on ornament, the design uses carefully considered materials to elevate an everyday architectural element into a defining feature of the home.

Together with antique furnishings, custom finishes, and thoughtfully integrated lighting, these details create an interior that feels layered, timeless, and distinctly personal.

At Archetype Design Collective, we believe exceptional residential architecture is experienced through every material, every touchpoint, and every thoughtfully considered detail.

Every luxury home renovation begins with a vision—but it's the collaboration behind the scenes that brings it to life.

What began as a clean, contemporary shell became an opportunity to create a home defined by warmth, texture, and timeless design. For this Newport Beach residence, Archetype Design Collective partnered with T.R. Wurster Construction and Kirsten Maltas Interiors to transform the interior into a cohesive, highly personalized living environment.

Through a collaborative design-build approach, the team coordinated everything from integrated lighting and custom millwork to bespoke furnishings and architectural details. Every element was carefully considered to ensure the home feels refined, functional, and distinctly tailored to the way the client lives.

Next in the Newport Beach Series: Handcrafted leather-wrapped railings—where craftsmanship becomes a defining architectural detail.

Most people renovate their bathroom. Few design an experience.

The most luxurious room in a home isn't always the living room. Sometimes it's the room where your day begins and ends.
The best bathroom design goes beyond selecting tile, fixtures, and finishes. It creates a space that feels calm, functional, and intentionally designed around everyday routines.

From floating vanities and integrated storage to oversized walk-in showers, statement fireplaces, and spa-inspired layouts, every detail should contribute to a more elevated experience. Luxury isn't about adding more. It's about creating a space that feels effortless every time you walk into it.

At Archetype Design Collective, we design custom bathrooms that blend modern architecture, integrated cabinetry, and thoughtful functionality to create spaces that feel like a private retreat within your home.

Why Developers and Homeowners Are Moving Toward Integrated Cabinetry.

Today's homeowners expect more from every square foot. Integrated cabinetry creates kitchens that feel larger, more organized, and more refined without increasing the footprint. By incorporating storage into the architecture itself, designers can enhance functionality, improve daily living, and elevate the overall experience of a home.

The clean lines, concealed storage, appliance integration, and thoughtful organization seen here aren't simply design decisions they're part of a larger strategy to create spaces that feel timeless, functional, and effortlessly livable.

Through the collaboration between Archetype Design Collective and BAU Team, integrated cabinetry becomes more than storage. It becomes part of the architecture itself, creating kitchens that balance beauty, performance, and long-term value.

Whether you're planning a custom home, luxury renovation, or reimagining an existing kitchen, our team can help explore design solutions tailored to the way you live.
