Born on August 26, 1918, Katherine Johnson was a brilliant NASA mathematician whose calculations helped shape the early U.S. space program. 👩🏾‍🚀

Before John Glenn became the first American to orbit Earth in 1962, he famously asked NASA to have Johnson personally verify the computer-generated trajectory calculations. She spent a day and a half checking the numbers by hand on a mechanical calculator — and confirmed they were correct. 🧮

Her groundbreaking work went far beyond checking calculations. She co-authored a NASA research paper on spacecraft trajectory and helped calculate flight paths for Alan Shepard, John Glenn, and the Apollo 11 mission. 🌙

Johnson worked at NASA for 33 years, retiring in 1986. In 2015, President Obama awarded her the Presidential Medal of Freedom for her extraordinary contributions to space exploration. 🏅

Her math helped humanity reach the stars. 🌌🚀

☀️ What if sunlight could travel underground? Japan is turning that idea into reality. 🇯🇵💡

Imagine working, studying, or shopping several meters below the ground—yet still being illuminated by real daylight from the sun.

That’s the idea behind fiber-optic daylighting technology. A rooftop collector captures sunlight and channels it through specially designed optical fibers or light-guiding systems, delivering natural-looking illumination into spaces where traditional windows may not be possible.

The potential is fascinating: instead of relying entirely on electric lights in underground or windowless interiors, buildings could use available daylight as part of their lighting system. That could mean lower electricity consumption, a more pleasant indoor environment, and smarter use of urban space.

🌱 Why does this matter?

As cities become more crowded, underground spaces are increasingly being used for offices, shopping areas, transportation, storage, and other facilities. Bringing daylight into these spaces could offer a creative way to make them feel less enclosed while potentially reducing the need for artificial lighting during sunny hours.

And there’s something almost futuristic about it: the sun is shining above the city, while its light is being guided beneath the ground. ☀️➡️🏙️➡️⬇️

Technologies like this show how engineering can rethink something as ordinary as lighting. Instead of simply producing more electricity to brighten buildings, we can also ask a different question:

🌊 A devastating disaster is unfolding along the Nepal–Tibet border.

A massive flash flood has left communities facing unimaginable destruction, with the reported death toll reaching at least 919 and more than 4,700 people still missing, according to the latest updates from Nepali and Chinese officials.

Rescue teams continue searching through damaged areas, while authorities warn that additional flooding and landslides remain possible. Roads, bridges and homes have been heavily damaged, making rescue and recovery efforts even more difficult.

Behind every number is a family waiting for answers, a community searching for loved ones, and countless people whose lives have been changed forever. 💔

Deep in the Atlantic Ocean lies one of the world’s most famous mysteries—the Bermuda Triangle. 🌊🗺️

This legendary region is generally described as a vast triangle stretching between Florida, Puerto Rico, and Bermuda, covering roughly 1 million square kilometers.

Over the years, more than 50 ships and 20 planes have reportedly disappeared within or near the Bermuda Triangle, fueling countless theories and stories of unexplained vanishings. ⛵✈️

One of the earliest famous accounts comes from Christopher Columbus, who reportedly described unusual compass readings and strange lights during his voyage through the region.

But the legend truly exploded in 1945, when five U.S. Navy aircraft known as Flight 19 disappeared during a training mission. A seaplane sent to search for them also vanished. In total, 27 people were lost.

Their disappearance sparked theories ranging from severe weather and navigational errors to much more mysterious explanations.

However, researchers note that many incidents associated with the Bermuda Triangle can have ordinary explanations, and the region has no officially defined boundaries.

Still, the legend continues to fascinate millions. 🌊👀 The combination of missing vessels, vanished aircraft, strange reports, and unanswered questions has made the Bermuda Triangle one of the world’s most enduring mysteries.

A public swimming pool in Minneapolis uses plants, gravel and biological filtration instead of chlorine to treat its water.

The Webber Natural Swimming Pool opened on July 24, 2015, becoming the first public natural swimming pool in North America. The facility holds approximately 500,000 gallons of water in a 21,000-square-foot swimming area.

Rather than relying on chemical disinfectants, the pool uses a biological filtration system. Water first passes through filters before flowing into an adjacent regeneration basin.

The basin covers roughly 16,500 square feet and contains approximately 7,000 aquatic plants growing among layers of limestone and granite gravel. The plants, gravel and microbial communities help remove nutrients and other contaminants from the water before it is pumped back into the swimming pool.

The entire volume of the pool is circulated through the filtration and regeneration system approximately every 12 hours. The pool is also vacuumed and cleaned regularly to remove debris.

The system requires careful management because it functions differently from a conventional chlorinated pool. Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board staff regularly test the water for bacteria including E. coli, Enterococci and Pseudomonas aeruginosa. The facility can be temporarily closed when test results exceed its established guidelines.

The idea also connects to the history of the site. Webber Park had a public swimming facility more than a century ago, but pollution eventually forced the earlier pool to switch to chlorinated water in the 1920s. The modern natural pool represents a return to biological water treatment using contemporary filtration technology and ecological design.

The result is a public swimming facility that operates more like a managed ecosystem than a conventional pool.

Instead of using chlorine to treat the water, Webber combines filtration, plants, gravel, microorganisms, regular cleaning and continuous monitoring to maintain swimming conditions.

It is an example of an engineered system borrowing some of its principles from nature rather than relying entirely on chemical treatment.

A Frozen World Hidden on Mars

This incredible landscape is not an artist’s imagination it shows a vast crater on Mars containing a massive deposit of water ice. Located in the planet’s northern polar region, the crater is roughly 80 kilometers (50 miles) across and contains a huge amount of water ice that has remained preserved for an extremely long time.

The reddish terrain surrounding the crater is typical of the Martian surface, while the bright white material inside is dominated by water ice. Scientists study formations like this to understand Mars’ ancient climate, its history of water, and where future missions might find valuable resources.

Captured by ESA’s Mars Express, this view offers a stunning reminder that Mars is far more diverse than its dusty, barren appearance suggests. 🔴❄️

France has developed an artificial heart that could potentially transform treatment for people with severe heart failure. 🫀🇫🇷

The device, called Aeson, was developed by French medical technology company CARMAT. It is designed as a fully implantable artificial heart capable of replacing the function of both sides of a failing human heart.

What makes the technology particularly interesting is its ability to adjust blood flow based on the patient’s activity. When the person is resting, the device can reduce its output. During physical activity, it can increase blood flow to meet the body’s greater demands. 🚶‍♂️❤️

Currently, Aeson is primarily used as a bridge to transplantation, helping some patients stay alive while they wait for a suitable donor heart.

However, the long-term vision is much more ambitious.

Researchers hope artificial hearts can eventually allow patients to live without requiring a donor transplant. If that becomes possible, it could dramatically change the future of heart failure treatment.

Instead of spending months waiting for a matching donor, patients could potentially receive an engineered replacement designed to support their circulation continuously.

The technology is not yet a permanent replacement for every patient, and significant challenges remain.

Still, artificial-heart research represents an important step toward a future where a failing heart may no longer automatically mean waiting for another human heart. 🫀🔬✨
