When a young man arrived at the ER in the middle of violent seizures, barely able to speak, his family said it had been building for days. The MRI results left the medical team stunned silent.

Sweden has become known for people voluntarily using tiny microchip implants in their hands as a replacement for everyday items like ID cards, credit cards, wallets, transit passes, and keys.

More than 6,000 people in Sweden have chosen to get these implants. They are usually about the size of a grain of rice and are placed under the skin between the thumb and index finger.

The chips use passive RFID or NFC technology. This means they do not track location, do not contain GPS, and do not send out information on their own.

They only work when scanned at very close range by a compatible reader. Once scanned, they can unlock office doors, allow contactless payments, store medical or emergency details, or connect to digital business cards and apps.

The trend began gaining attention around 2015, especially among tech workers, early adopters, and biohacking enthusiasts. Interest has continued, including a renewed wave in 2024 when around 150 employees at a Swedish tech innovation hub received implants for workplace access.

Research and reporting on human microchip implants, including studies on RFID and NFC use in human-computer interaction, have often described the implants as biocompatible and generally safe when inserted properly. The procedure is quick, minimally invasive, and usually done by trained professionals in controlled settings.

The technology has also raised questions about privacy, ethics, data security, and possible surveillance. In Sweden, however, the implants remain voluntary and are driven by individual choice rather than government or corporate requirements.

With a sack full of supplies, Chris visited Calizo Elementary School and Calizo National High School to hand-deliver 80 boxes of crayons to each campus.
