Join us May 5th at 5pm in Boyer Hall 130 for an exciting workshop about how to tell a story without any words. This workshop will explain the best practices of visual communication, including color theory, implicit shape associations, spacing and symmetry, and just the right amount of data and information. Attendees will learn how to design slides elegantly and informatively without overwhelming their audience. Learning to deliberately incorporate elements of visual storytelling that facilitate the audience’s understanding of a static image is essential for presenting posters and PowerPoints at conferences and increasingly important with the rise of graphical abstracts for peer-reviewed papers and is a transferrable skill for all jobs requiring graduate education. The first half of the workshop will explain the visual techniques that will give your presentations an advantage while the second half will be an opportunity to sketch out ideas and get feedback.

Last month, the UCLA Science Policy Group hosted a booth at UCLA’s annual event! We had the opportunity to engage with visitors of all ages. Our exhibit featured an interactive DNA bracelet making actively where people could use the genetic code to spell out their names. Scientific progress depends on the next generation and we had more than 100 children attend our booth to interact with a tactile science concept. We look forward to next year’s event. If you attended, message us with your favorite memory or drop a suggestion in the comments of what you want to now more about next year! #

Jessica is the Associate Director of Insights and Analytics at the Research Translation Platform (RTP) at Penn State University. RTP studies how policymakers utilize research evidence in policymaking, and how research can drive better policy outcomes.

Learn more about what science policy is, what a typical day looks like for a professional in the field, and what skills are particularly useful in translating research to policy!
