The Performance Pavilion at Luther George Park is complete!
, a specialized steel fabricator from the Netherlands, provided detailed calculations for Nous’ peer review and approval of the project. Nous provided code consulting and helped develop appropriate loading criteria and justify code compliant checks for the custom non-linear analysis of the surface. Structural engineering services also included coordination with the architect and local contractor.

Nous Engineering is on the move! We are thrilled to announce the addition of two new principals: Jeff Roi, SE who joins Nous from Degenkolb and Jon Buckley, SE from Miyamoto. Together, they add deep expertise across various market sectors.

Jeff brings specific expertise in lab/biotech/healthcare seismic retrofits and tightly-calibrated new builds and will expand Nous’ work in the Science & Technology sector. He has also worked extensively with cities and counties to develop retrofit policies and seismic ordinances.

Jon brings to Nous a strong track record of providing innovative structural solutions to K-12, community college, and higher education campuses along with essential services facilities where critical operations cannot be disrupted. This includes numerous conditional assessments of existing buildings to ensure they conform to building codes and special standards such as those through the Division of the State Architect (DSA).

Jeff joins the Los Angeles office — recently relocated to Eagle Rock — and Jon will help grow the newly-established San Diego office to better serve Nous’ clients across Southern California, particularly Long Beach, South Bay, Orange County and San Diego.
The addition of Jeff and Jon represents a deliberate next step in Nous’ strategic plan to grow from a boutique engineering studio into an established office practicing throughout Southern California. Their experience is invaluable in both their ability to better service our clients and to further grow and develop our team.

Did you know? Los Angeles is the #1 place for civil engineers in 2022 according to .

"They say that people go to New York to ‘make it’ but go to Los Angeles to ‘make things.’ This rings so true. I think LA is a collective of individuals who embrace a spirit of invention and experimentation, breaking from the status quo and thinking differently.”

Go check out the article in this month's Profession & Practice section on the ASCE website and conversation with one of Nous Engineering's founding Principals, Matt Melnyk.

Be sure to check out Samara Golden's art piece "Guts" which is now on view by appointment at the North while it's there through late March. We loved helping out on the structure with this one!

You can also head over to the feature for more information on the piece and the artist.

Starting the new year off right! A big thank you to for highlighting women in the AEC industry.

"The women who make their way to become standouts in these historically male-dominated fields are truly pioneers. There’s still a way to go for representation in the building game, but the needle is moving, and the industry offers great opportunities for advancement for women. Congratulations to the extraordinary, trailblazing women who made this list and thank you for your contributions to the Los Angeles economy … and skyline."

One of our founding principals, Liz Mahlow, is in good company with the recently published 2022 Women of Influence in Construction, Architecture, and Engineering. We look forward to the future and are continuing to celebrate all of the women at Nous!

As we approach nearly 10 years since starting Nous Engineering, we look back on one of our very first projects: The Wonderland Residences.
The project redeveloped a challenging site in the Hollywood Hills where a single-family residence once occupied 3 parcels. We were excited to be working with our friends then and now. Ten years ago, we set out to provide cutting edge service; we have been fortunate to collaborate with wonderful designers, colleagues, and friends through the years. This Thanksgiving, we are grateful for the opportunities we have had, and are grateful for the team that is Nous.

The Wonderland Residences has gone on to win the 2021 American Architecture Award from the Chicago Athenaeum and a Merit Award for the 2021 AIA|California Residential Design Awards.

The approx. 10,500 SF Glorya Kaufman Performing Arts Center was an adaptive reuse of an existing building which includes a 300-seat theatre and accommodates dance, music, teaching, and theatrical productions as the glowing new center of the Vista Del Mar Campus! Structural work included a seismic upgrade, foundation underpinning, theatre seating platforms, and a new two-story extension to the original building.

Congrats to the project team and for the 2021 Design Awards citation in the educational category!

Measuring a compact 1,244 square feet, this early Lautner hillside residence features two bedrooms, two bathrooms, built-in furniture and bookcases, and wrap-around windows to maintain the all-important connection to nature.

Lautner wrote of the project "This was my first try at architecture on my own after six years' apprentice training with Frank Lloyd Wright at Taliesin East and West. Naturally I felt inadequate on leaving the architectural genius of the last three or four hundred years. But I had to try, and found that in a modest way I could conceive and construct a satisfying work of architecture. I knew that only practice would improve my ability. Frank Lloyd Wright approved this house, and on publication, architectural critic Henry Russell Hitchcock called it the 'best house by an architect under 30 in the US.' It still took 30 years to get established."

After generating a 3D point cloud and working with throughout the design phase of the sensitive restoration, we are excited to be moving forward into construction.
