RO water is great for what comes out of the tap. It's tougher on what it flows through. Because it's stripped of minerals, it's more corrosive to some metals over time.

Don't wait for the first freeze warning to think about your outdoor plumbing.

September is a good time to walk around your property and check every outdoor faucet.

Look for leaks or drips, inspect handles and components for damage, disconnect hoses when they're no longer needed, and take care of repairs before temperatures start dropping.

And remember, frost-proof doesn't mean maintenance-proof.
A frost-proof hydrant needs to be able to drain after it's shut off to provide freeze protection.

That slow drip from your outdoor faucet is easy to ignore.

The water adds up.

According to EPA WaterSense, a faucet dripping just once per second can waste more than 3,000 gallons of water per year.

As summer winds down, inspect outdoor faucets and valves for drips, worn components and other signs that maintenance may be needed.

Sometimes the solution isn't a new faucet. It may simply be a replacement component.

That small problem you've been ignoring all summer? October is a good time to take care of it.

Walk your outdoor faucets and check for:
• Damaged handles
• Damaged vacuum breakers
• Faucets that are difficult to turn
• Components that are loose, cracked or worn

Many Arrowhead faucets are designed with replaceable components, so a problem doesn't necessarily mean replacing the entire faucet.

For example, Arrowhead's 301SS and 302SS stainless steel hose bibs have replacement handles, stem assemblies and stem rebuild kits available.

Replacing the stem in your Arrowhead hydrant starts with knowing exactly what you have.

First, determine whether your hydrant is a standard or anti-siphon model. Then shut off the water supply, remove the handle and pull out the existing stem.

Measure the stem and use the Arrowhead Parts Finder to identify the correct replacement for your product.

Once you've got the right part, insert the new stem, reinstall the handle, turn the water back on and check your repair.
