A manatee is basically a 1,000-pound submarine powered by salad, lungs, and strategically managed digestive gas.

Here’s how the strange system works.

Manatees can spend roughly eight hours a day grazing, using flexible lips to pull up seagrass and other aquatic plants. An adult may consume close to 100 pounds of wet vegetation daily, and fermenting that much greenery produces plenty of gas inside its enormous digestive tract.

That gas can affect buoyancy. Storing it makes the animal more buoyant, while releasing it helps reduce lift so the manatee can descend. Their long lungs, heavy bones, muscular diaphragm, and intestinal gas all work together to control movement without wasting much energy.

The system matters enough that constipated manatees have been observed struggling to dive, sometimes floating awkwardly at the surface until the problem is treated.

Nature built the sea cow like a living submarine, then gave it the least dignified ballast system imaginable.

This surreal formation is a frozen lava fountain from Oldoinyo Lengai in Tanzania—the only volcano on Earth that erupts rare carbonate lava instead of ordinary silicate lava. At just around 500°C, it's much cooler and far more fluid than typical lava, flowing almost like water. As it bursts into the air, it cools and hardens so quickly that entire fountains can freeze mid-flight, creating strange, fragile formations that resemble dripping sandcastles rather than volcanic rock.
