Swagato Banerjee, associate professor of physics in the College of Arts & Sciences, is among the researchers in the ATLAS Collaboration at CERN’s Large Hadron Collider honored with the 2025 Breakthrough Prize in Fundamental Physics. The award recognizes their detailed measurements of Higgs boson properties confirming the symmetry-breaking mechanism of mass generation, discovery of new strongly interacting particles, studies of rare processes and matter-antimatter asymmetry, as well as exploration of nature at the shortest distances and most extreme conditions.

With deep sadness that we share the passing of Professor John J. Sinai, former Chair of the Department of Physics and Astronomy at UofL. Professor Sinai served the university in several leadership roles including as Associate Dean and Chair of the Faculty Senate. Following his retirement, he continued his service as the President of University of Louisville Association of Retired Personnel (ULARP). He made lasting contributions to academic leadership and will be remembered with great respect and affection by his colleagues, students, and the broader university community.
