Electric Arc Furnaces (EAFs) are brute force machines of steelmaking, but there’s a surprising amount of science, strategy, and precision behind all the molten metal.

⚡Electricity is used to melt metal
Unlike traditional blast furnaces that use coke (a form of coal), EAFs utilize a high-powered electric arc to generate the intense heat needed to melt scrap steel and other metals.

🔄Sustainable steelmaking
EAFs primarily use recycled scrap metal, making them a more environmentally friendly option compared to blast furnace methods that rely on raw materials like iron ore and coking coal.

🔥High temperatures
The electric arc in an EAF can reach temperatures of around 3,000°C (5,400°F) and exhaust gasses routinely see over 1,200°C (2,200°F).

EAFs can be started and stopped relatively quickly, allowing for flexibility in production to meet fluctuating market demands.
