FABRICATION & FINISHING HELPER — DNK Fabrication (Lubbock, TX)
DNK Fabrication is a small, modern metal fab shop in Lubbock. We run a 3kW fiber laser with a 6.5' x 13' bed and build high-end work — ranch entrance signs, custom gates and metal furniture, stainless food-grade equipment, structural and field work. Our product gets powder coated and hung where people look at it every day. Finish quality IS the product.
STRAIGHT TALK ABOUT THIS JOB: this is not a welding job that happens to include grinding — it's a finishing job that includes welding. Most days are grinding, weld dressing, surface prep, breaking parts out of laser-cut sheets, deburring, fit-up, and assembly. The welding we do is cosmetic and precision work, not farm-and-repair welding. If a weld has to disappear under powder coat, it's the grinder work that makes that happen. If you're great with a flap disc, we want to talk to you.
WHAT YOU'LL DO DAILY:
- Grind and dress welds to a cosmetic finish — flap-disc control matters more here than bead control
- Surface prep: millscale removal, deburring laser-cut parts, prep for powder coat
- Break parts out of cut sheets, sort, stage
- Fit up and tack assemblies to drawings
- MIG welding on mild steel as your skills allow
- Material handling, loading/unloading, shop upkeep
MUST HAVE:
- Initiative and anticipation — you see what needs doing and do it, without being told. You notice the next need coming: the part that needs staging, the grinder that needs a fresh disc, the floor that needs clearing before the next sheet lands. People who stand around waiting to be assigned don't work out here.
- Real grinder competence (angle grinder, flap discs, hard discs) — clean control, no gouging
- Show up on time, every time
- Care whether the part looks right — work gets checked on finish, not just "done"
- Reliable transportation; able to move steel all day
NICE TO HAVE (these move your starting pay up from day one):
- Clean MIG on thin gauge
- TIG or laser-welding experience
- Can read fabrication drawings
- Powder-prep or auto-body background
- Forklift
PAY AND SETUP:
- 1099 contract position. Starting rate $14-17/hr, set by what you prove in your first week — bring skills, start higher.
- How this shop works: as you get faster and better, your pay goes up. Period. Much of our work converts to per-piece rates, and once a rate is set it never drops because you got quick — efficiency is your raise, not the shop's clawback. We're building a place where getting better shows up in your check.
- Typically weekdays; we do work some weekends as the work demands. Part-time to start, room to grow into full-time as the work grows.
TO APPLY: email or text is the method for reaching out about this job — no calls. Send photos of your work — welds AND ground finishes — plus a few sentences about your background, and tell us about a time you fixed something nobody asked you to fix.
