Ludington Daily News August 8, 1953. In 1902 the Stearns Coal and Lumber Co. began mining sand at the current location in Ludington where Sargent Sand is mining now. Another cool tidbit in this article is that during those days in the 1950’s 90% of all the Coca Cola glass bottles in the world originated from sand that came from Ludington & Manistee!

Seniority list from summer of 1969. So many familiar names. 1969 saw Sargent Sand Ludington move over one million tons of sand to the industrial heart of the USA.

The constant shifting of Lake Michigan sand dunes due to the natural occurrence of wind erosion is threatening homes to the south of Ludington in the Silver Lake area. The Lake Michigan sand dunes have been moving for thousands of years along the west coast of Michigan & continue to this day.

Shifting sand dunes have already buried several cottages along Silver Lake in Oceana County.

Photo from 1966 at the Ludington mine. The wash plant and railroad are pictured. In these days to dry the wet processed sand Sargent Sand Co. utilized up to 5 rotary kiln dryers. They were loud, smoky and inefficient but got the job done!

1971 Sargent Sand Company land gift of 409 acres and 2.33 miles of Lake Michigan shoreline to the State of Michigan for the enrichment of the Ludington State Park.
