CAN A TREE EXPLODE DUE TO COLD? According to Chief Meteorologist Justin Liles the short answer is "Sort of". Whether you like it or not, it is often referred to as exploding trees. In technical terms its known as frost cracking or ice splitting, but the trees don't actually explode. What happens is freezing sap expands, creating pressure inside the tree that splits the bark and wood with loud cracking sounds, though it's rare and usually involves sudden, extreme temperature drops. It happens because water in the tree expands and bursts the cellular structure, similar to pipes freezing, causing dramatic cracks or even trunk splits. It looks a lot like the photo provided.
