Not Your Average Retaining Wall Project

Pictures don’t always show the scale of what’s involved in a project like this.

This wall is actually being rebuilt after the original retaining wall failed. When a retaining wall gives way, it’s usually not a small problem. You’re dealing with thousands of pounds of soil movement, displaced materials, and a structure that can no longer safely do its job.

The blocks we’re installing weigh thousands of pounds each and require specialized equipment, careful planning, and experienced operators to place safely and accurately. Every block has to be picked, swung, aligned, and set within inches while working on a hillside with very little room for error.

Our John Deere 50G excavator may be considered a “mini” excavator, but it’s a capable machine when it comes to handling heavy materials. Lift capacity changes dramatically based on the machine’s position, the reach required, and the terrain it’s sitting on. A block that can be lifted easily close to the machine may be beyond its safe lifting range just a few feet farther away.

What most people don’t see is everything happening behind the scenes:

▪️ Removing failed materials and unstable soil
▪️ Excavating and reshaping the hillside
▪️ Building a foundation capable of supporting the new wall
▪️ Moving and placing multi-thousand-pound concrete blocks
▪️ Maintaining proper alignment and setback throughout the wall
▪️ Fine grading and restoring the surrounding property

A retaining wall isn’t just a stack of blocks. It’s a structure that has to resist tremendous forces every single day. When they’re built correctly, they can last for decades. When they’re not, eventually gravity wins.

Projects like this are why we enjoy what we do. Taking a failed wall and rebuilding it into something stronger, safer, and built to last is one of the most rewarding parts of the job.

One thing I’ve learned running a business is that opportunities often come from the people you know.
