Why Does Concrete Have Different PSI Ratings?
PSI stands for pound per square inch and is one way we describe the compressive strength of concrete. But why are there different PSI ratings? Different projects have different demands. A residential driveway doesn't necessarily require the same strength as a commercial foundation or major infrastructure project. Choosing the right mix for the application helps ensure the concrete can perform as intended.

August Project Recap!
Another busy month is in the books! Throughout August, our teams were hard at work supplying the concrete and aggregate materials needed for projects across our communities.
From job site concrete pours to aggregate production, every project takes planning, coordination, equipment, and a dedicated team to bring it all together. We're proud of the work our crews, drivers, operators, and partners put in every day. Each project is another opportunity to help build roads, businesses, homes, and infrastructure that keeps our communities moving!

Why Does Concrete Crack?
It's one of the most common questions about concrete-and the answer isn't always as simple as you might think. Concrete can crack for several reasons, including changes in temperature, shrinkage as it hardens, ground movement, heavy loads, or other environmental factors.
That's why proper planning, preparation, placement, and jointing are all important parts of a successful concrete project. While some cracking can occur naturally, the goal is to control where and how cracking happens so the finished concrete can perform as intended!

The Final Step That Makes a Difference.
When most people think about concrete, they think about the finished surface-but there's a lot that goes into creating it. The finishing process helps shape the surface, improve its appearance, and prepares it for how the concrete will be used. Depending on the project, concrete can have different finishes designed for specific needs, from smooth surfaces to finishes that provide addition texture and traction.
The right finish is an important part of creating concrete that looks great and performs well for years to come.

You might see a moving loader moving around a Wingra Stone site, but there' s a lot more to this piece than meets the eye!
Loaders play an important role in aggregate operations by moving and loading materials such as sand, gravel, and crushed stone. They help transport materials around the site, keep stockpiles organized, ad efficiently load materials for their next destination.
From extraction and processing to loading and delivery, every step of the aggregate process depends on the right equipment and the people who know how to operate it. It takes a lot of moving parts to keep construction materials moving and our equipment operators are an important part of making it happen!

How concrete gets its strength?
Concrete's strength comes from the interaction between cement, water, and aggregates. When water and cement react, they form a strong binding material that holds aggregates together.
As concrete cures, this process continues and the concrete develops its strength over time. That carefully designed combination is what makes concrete such important material for everything from sidewalks and driveways to buildings, bridges, and highways.

Pouring concrete is only the beginning! Proper curing gives concrete the time and conditions it needs to develop its intended strength and durability.
A few important reminders:
✔️ Keep moisture levels consistent
✔️Protect the concrete from extreme temperatures
✔️Follow the recommended curing time
✔️Give the concrete time to reach its intended strength
Taking care of concrete after the pour can make a big difference in long-term performance of a project.

We were excited to welcome the She Builds Construct Camp to Wingra yesterday!
During their visit, the campers got a hands-on look at how concrete is made, from the materials that go into it to the process that turns those materials into one of the most important building products we use every day. They also learned why concrete is so important to our communities and how Wingra helps provide the materials needed to build roads, buildings, bridges, and other residential infrastructure.
She Builds is a great opportunity to introduce young women to the construction industry, explore different career paths, and show them that there is a place for them in building a future. We are proud to be part of their experience and share a little bit of what we do at Wingra!
