As we reflect on a few of the milestones from the past 60 years, it’s hard not to feel excited about what comes next.

From continued advancements in thermoforming and packaging design to evolving sustainability efforts and smarter manufacturing processes, the next chapter is already underway.

And while a lot has changed over the years, the focus remains the same: creating Simply Better Packaging for our customers and the industries we serve.

In 2016, Placon expanded its manufacturing capabilities with the acquisition of Brookdale Plastics in Plymouth, Minnesota.

This facility increased production capacity and strengthened support for customers across the food, retail, and medical packaging markets, helping Placon continue to deliver quality, flexibility, and innovation at scale.

It was another chapter in building for the future.

In 2011, Placon expanded its medical packaging footprint with the acquisition of Barger Packaging and its Elkhart, Indiana production facility.

This addition strengthened Placon’s presence in the medical and pharmaceutical markets adding advanced custom medical packaging capabilities, including ISO-certified cleanroom production. Today, the Elkhart facility produces stock and custom medical packaging solutions used by hospitals and healthcare facilities world-wide.

It was a milestone that helped shape the future of Placon Medical.

Sustainability has been part of Placon’s story for decades. In 2002, Placon began in-house extrusion of post-consumer recycled PET material, incorporating recycled plastic into new packaging and reducing material sent to landfills.

It marked an important step toward a closed-loop approach to manufacturing, where PET material can be continuously recycled, reused, and transformed into new packaging solutions.

That mindset still guides how we innovate and move forward today.

The 1980s brought a big shift in packaging design when Placon introduced the patented BlisterBox®, the first-ever thermoformed clamshell, modernizing retail packaging for brands across the U.S.

More than 40 years later, the BlisterBox® remains a top choice for customers today. While the basic Blisterbox design remains, the line has evolved with expanded sizes, compartments, and configurations to meet changing customer needs and industry trends.

For 60 years, Placon has been driven by innovation, collaboration, and a passion for packaging
that performs. To commemorate this historic milestone, we’re taking a look back at the
moments, milestones, and ideas that shaped who we are today.

Placon was founded in 1966 by Tom Mohs, who started making plastic jewelry boxes in his
basement with a small thermoforming machine. He quickly recognized the opportunity to
expand into packaging for food and retail with some of his first customers being Wisconsin
cheese manufacturers.

What started as one idea quickly grew into six decades of innovation, partnership, and Simply
Better Packaging®.
