Human Powered Vehicle Team, UW-Madison

Human Powered Vehicle Team, UW-Madison The UW-Madison Human Powered Vehicle Club designs, builds, and races a human powered vehicle each year for an annual ASME competition.

Students are encouraged to join a subteam, including frame, fairing, and drivetrain to help design the vehicle. The Human Powered Vehicle team at UW-Madison is a group of engineering students ranging from freshmen to graduate students. Every year we create an innovative, completely human powered vehicle, often resembling a recumbent style bicycle. This bike is designed, fabricated and tested thro

ughout the academic year and then raced against teams from around the world at an ASME competition. We are a small group where each member gets lots of hands-on engineering experience and can be very involved with the team. We'd love to see more friendly faces to bring new thoughts to the drawing board! The team relies on sponsorships to fund materials, travel, and other competition costs by different companies throughout the United States. If your company is interested in helping fund our bike or donating services or products please email Alec Onesti, Industry Relations Officer, at [email protected].

Introducing the Carbon Badger! In April 2019, the Carbon Badger earned 6th place overall out of 50 teams at the ASME E-Fest North Human Powered Vehicle Competition at Michigan State University. The frame had a tadpole trike geometry and was fabricated from composite materials.

Carbon Badger features:
• Carbon fiber nose cone
• Aluminum frame
• 3D-printed PLA joints wrapped in carbon fiber
• Carbon fiber RPS
• Adjustable pinned bottom bracket
• Retractable trailer hitch
• A rack and pinion steering system was also designed and prototyped, but does not appear on the final bike.

Meet Ryan, the industry relations chair on the team. His favorite part of being on the HPVC team is learning about different fields. “When I joined as a freshman, I didn't have any engineering experience," he said. "Along the way, I learned about 3D printing, manufacturing, programming and a whole bunch of other stuff. I even got to work with a car crash testing facility!" Ryan is most excited about the bike's carbon frame and is excited to take a new approach to their old design.

Meet Sam, a member of the team since Spring 2016. Sam's favorite part about HPVC is the opportunities it provides. “Coming from a strong welding background, I love the opportunities this team provides its members for machining, welding and other forms of manufacturing,” he said. Sam also enjoys going to competition and learning what the other schools are doing.
