Our most popular installed shingle color at Sun Vault Roofing is Moire Black. About a third of customers choose because it works on almost any house.

It is timeless, does not clash with most exterior colors, and if you are adding solar, the dark glass of the shingles blends better with black than with lighter colors.

Do black shingles make your house warmer? No. At least not if your attic is properly ventilated and insulated. You should pick a color based on what looks best. But there is one potential concern to know about: urban heat. If every house on the block goes dark, the neighborhood can get warmer.

Asphalt shingle prices track crude oil prices with a sixty to ninety day lag. An asphalt shingle is made of three things: fiberglass, rock granules, and asphalt. That third component is a byproduct of crude oil refining. When oil prices increased in March 2026, Wisconsin suppliers raised shingle prices by approximately ten percent starting in June.

Material cost increases in the roofing industry tend to hold even when the oil price that drove them falls back. Suppliers also tend to raise prices at least once per year independent of oil market movement. A quote received today reflects current costs. A quote received six months from now may be higher regardless of what oil does in the meantime.

At Sun Vault Roofing, estimates are typically valid for thirty days from delivery. If you are planning a roof replacement and have a quote in hand, that window matters.

A common question we get: are solar shingles affected by oil price swings the same way asphalt is? The material cost structure is different and not as directly tied to crude oil. That said, integrated solar roofs do still use some asphalt shingle materials, so they are not fully insulated from cost increases either.

Batteries are a common upsell that out-of-state solar installer push here in Wisconsin, but Sun Vault Roofing tells most Wisconsin homeowners going solar to skip the battery. Here is why.

Wisconsin utilities rank among the most reliable in the country. The average home here experiences roughly 2-3 short outages every five years (*correction to the wrong stat in the video). A battery costs ten to fifteen thousand dollars. That math does not work as a financial investment in Wisconsin. It works as an expensive insurance policy against a risk that rarely shows up.

Batteries make sense in states with wide peak and off-peak pricing gaps or strong rebates. Wisconsin has neither. The one exception is rural homes with genuinely frequent outages, and even then, treat it as peace of mind, not a return.

The number on a shingle package is a warranty rating determined in a lab, not a guarantee of how long your roof will last.

In Wisconsin, the gap between the rated lifespan and the actual lifespan comes down to three things: how well the attic is ventilated, how carefully the original install was done, and whether the roof gets inspected and serviced over time. Skip any one of those, and you are dramatically shortening your roof's life.

Know what you are actually buying before you pick a shingle. And don't skip those annual inspections.
