KRQE reported that young science engineers from South Valley Academy (a public school in Albuquerque) and science heads from Sandia Labs launched a high altitude balloon last week. The experimental package included data collection, an important factor in mathematics and science lessons. Of particular interest was the payload that included seeds and algae.
I don't believe school administrators fathom, or for that matter glean, how important activities such as these are to a developing mind.....or what they can come to be in the life of a kid. This is the kind of stuff dreams are made of.

As part of the NM Centennial back 2012, a Magdalena fifth grade class built and launched a rocket celebrating New Mexico' 100th birthday and the history of science within our state. We (the Kids' Science Cafe' )still have the rocket that was launched out at the VLA. The other day, a young Rocketeer decided she should fly again. So here we go.....

Since it's discovery in 1936, the inner cores of Earth and their movements have created a good many arguments with and between scientists. We are told that there have been times when the core rotates faster than the Earth itself and other times at the same speed of rotation. Now we are being told that this inner core is spinning slower than the Earth is rotating. Apparently, evidence suggests these rotation patterns are part of a 70 year cycle. No one, knows what this (different rotation speeds of the inner core) means.
