FacilitiesNet recently published an article by our Senior Vice President and Director of Southwest Florida Todd Griffith PE LEED AP , on how drought restrictions can become a practical resilience test for facilities teams.

In “Florida’s Drought Restrictions Are a Facilities Wake Up Call,” Todd outlines why water management must extend beyond landscape irrigation to include indoor fixtures, cooling equipment, operational routines and vendor coordination. He encourages owners and facility managers to use current restrictions to uncover leaks, validate system controls, clarify accountability, and improve capital planning. The result is more than short term compliance: it is a more efficient, resilient, and manageable property.

September is National Preparedness Month, and we’re reminded that resilient communities start with being ready individually, operationally, and together.

This year’s FEMA Ready Campaign theme, “Americans Stand Ready,” reflects the power of self-reliance, informed action, and community resilience in the face of natural and man-made disasters.

From emergency power and life safety systems to redundant and alternate system infrastructure, thoughtful engineering helps prepare for what matters most—before it matters most. At Matern, we deliver accurate, efficient solutions that help our clients build with confidence.

We believe “Green Design” is more than just the materials used for building systems; it is a complete understanding of how a building is utilized, energy consumption and maintenance requirements, but most importantly the goals of the owner.

Sustainability isn’t just an achievable rating system; it’s a balance of environmental stewardship, resiliency, maintainability and overall ROI and system longevity. We’ve honored energy efficiency since long before LEED®, Green Globes and ENERGY STAR became industry standards. We design for efficiency because our clients deserve infrastructure that is as fiscally responsible as it is ecologically sound.

We’re pleased to see mechanical engineer Jesús Aldana and plumbing and fire protection designer Aimée Davis featured in an expert Q&A with Consulting-Specifying Engineer ! They share practical tips for building owners, facility teams, and design professionals aiming to reduce water use while protecting reliability, sanitation, and compliance. The strategies address avoidable water loss, system performance, and supporting conservation goals without creating health or maintenance risks.

“Before reducing water needed for essential cooling, facilities should first address avoidable losses such as leaks, drift, overflow, and excessive blowdown,” Aldana writes.
