❄️ Winter Storm Notice | Heating Support Available ❄️

With a winter storm potentially impacting the DMV area this weekend — including snow, ice, and dangerously cold temperatures — KW Smith & Son will be available for heating-related service calls.

⚠️ Please note: Response times may be delayed if road or weather conditions become unsafe. Technician and customer safety is our top priority.

Because ice affects our area very differently than snow, a little preparation now can make a big difference:

🕒 Before the storm
• Charge phones, power banks & flashlights
• Fill gas tanks & pick up essentials early
• Choose one “warm room” if power goes out
• Locate your breaker panel & water shut-off

🚰 Protect your pipes
• Drip faucets on exterior walls
• Open cabinets under sinks
• Disconnect hoses & cover outdoor spigots

🔥 Heat & home safety
• Have extra blankets and warm layers ready
• Test smoke & carbon monoxide detectors
• Never use grills or generators indoors

🚗 Travel & power tips
• Avoid driving once freezing rain begins
• Bridges freeze first
• Keep fridge doors closed during outages

❗ Important reminder:
¼” of ice can cause outages — ½” can mean days without power.

If you experience a heating issue, contact us and we’ll respond as soon as conditions safely allow.

Stay warm, stay safe, and keep an eye on local weather updates. 💙

❄️ Winter Heat Pump Reminder ❄️

Snow is expected this weekend in DMV area, with accumulating snow likely Saturday and Sunday. That means it’s a great time to prepare your heat pump for winter weather.

*** Clear Snow From the Outdoor Unit:
Snow and ice buildup around the outdoor unit can block airflow and make your system work harder or shut down.
✔️ Gently remove snow and ice around the outdoor unit
✔️ Keep 18–24 inches of clearance on all sides
✔️ Be sure the top of the unit is not covered

🚫 Please do not pour hot water or use sharp tools.

During Severe Weather – Emergency Heat
In heavy snow, ice, or extreme cold, it may be recommended to:
👉 Turn ON Emergency Heat

Emergency Heat:
- Shuts off the outdoor heat pump
- Uses backup heating only
- Helps protect the system if the outdoor unit is frozen or not working properly

⚠️ Important: Emergency Heat uses much more electricity and should only be used temporarily.

After the Weather Improves
✔️ Clear all snow and ice from the outdoor unit
✔️ Turn the heat pump back ON
✔️ Switch OFF Emergency Heat

Forgetting to switch back can lead to higher electric bills.

✅ Friendly Reminder: Be safe while clearing snow and prepared for winter weather ❄️
