Sometimes the best way to remember what our customers do every day is to jump into a project yourself.

A simple dining table refinishing project this weekend quickly turned into a garage full of dust, a pile of SurfPrep abrasives, and a fresh appreciation for the work that goes into getting a great finish.

The cabinet makers, finishers, refinishers, and woodworkers we work with all the time make it look easy on social media. But the truth is, getting those clean, consistent results takes a lot of skill, patience, experience, and hard work.

We’re grateful for the trust our customers put in Novalk USA products and thankful for awesome partners like surfprepsanding who help make projects like this happen.

To everyone sanding, spraying, finishing, and delivering quality work every day—thank you. We appreciate everything you do, and we’re proud to be a small part of your success.

🧠 NOVALK KNOWS | TECH TALK THURSDAY

⚠️ Why Is Your White Finish Yellowing?

Not all white finishes age the same way.

Yellowing can come from:
• UV exposure
• Heat & oxidation
• Alkyd resin chemistry
• Ambering clear coats
• Storage conditions
• Improper system selection

This is especially noticeable on:
✔️ White cabinetry
✔️ Light grays
✔️ Natural white oak
✔️ Modern “raw wood look” finishes

One major factor is resin technology.

Many traditional pre-cats and conversion varnishes rely heavily on alkyd resins, which naturally amber over time as they oxidize.

By comparison, melamine-based systems, acrylic technologies, and advanced waterborne coatings generally offer significantly improved color stability and resistance to yellowing.

That’s one reason many modern European coating systems have shifted toward:
✅ Higher melamine resin content
✅ Acrylic technologies
✅ Waterborne systems
✅ Non-yellowing clear chemistry

The goal isn’t just durability —
it’s keeping whites cleaner and light woods looking natural long after installation.

💡 Best Practices to Reduce Yellowing:
• Use non-yellowing clear systems over whites/light woods
• Choose the correct resin technology
• Control film build and cure conditions
• Avoid excessive heat and UV exposure
• Test the full coating system together

Not all “white” finishes stay white the same way.

TUESDAY PRODUCT HIGHLIGHT | NWIA149919 NATURAL EFFECT TOPCOAT

One of the biggest trends in wood finishing right now is the demand for lighter, more natural-looking wood tones — especially on species like white oak, ash, maple, and other contemporary wood designs.

The challenge?

Traditional clear coats often introduce unwanted ambering, warming, or yellowing that changes the natural appearance of the wood.

That’s where our NWIA149919 1K/2K Waterborne Natural Effect Topcoat was designed to stand apart.

This advanced waterborne technology helps preserve the raw, natural appearance of the wood while still delivering the protection and performance finishers expect from a premium coating system.

Key features and benefits include:

✔ 1K/2K waterborne versatility
✔ Natural effect appearance with minimal color shift
✔ Helps reduce yellowing and ambering common with traditional clears
✔ Exceptional clarity and high transparency
✔ Ultra-low sheen, raw wood appearance
✔ Smooth, silky touch and feel
✔ Fast drying and production-friendly application
✔ Excellent vertical hang and sprayability
✔ Ideal for modern light wood aesthetics and contemporary cabinetry

Perfect for applications where the goal is to protect the wood — not change its appearance.

Best use cases include:

• White oak cabinetry and millwork
• Contemporary furniture
• Natural wood interior doors
• Light-tone residential and commercial projects
• Scandinavian and modern design aesthetics
• Projects where clients want the “unfinished wood” look with real protection

Natural wood trends continue to dominate the market — and finishers need coating systems that complement that design direction instead of fighting against it.

⚠️ Your Color Match Is Only As Good As Your Master Standard

One of the most overlooked causes of color inconsistency in production finishing is outdated or inaccurate in-house color masters.

Many shops run the same “standard” colors for years:
✔️ Whites
✔️ Blacks
✔️ Grays
✔️ Popular stains
✔️ Customer-approved custom colors

But over time, those original master samples often become compromised from:
• UV exposure
• Oxidation
• Heat and humidity swings
• Dirt and handling contamination
• Finish yellowing or aging
• Physical wear and scratching

The result?

A shop may unknowingly be matching today’s production to a color standard that no longer accurately represents the original approved target.

That’s where repeatability starts to break down.

💡 Best Practices for Maintaining Accurate Color Masters:

• Keep a protected “archive master” stored away from production use
• Use separate “working masters” on the production floor
• Store standards flat and out of direct sunlight
• Avoid excessive handling and fingerprints on finished surfaces
• Label samples with:

* Date created
* Coating system used
* Sheen level
* Substrate species/material
* Formula or color code revisions

• Periodically compare working standards back to the original approved archive master
• Replace damaged, yellowed, scratched, or aged standards routinely
• Evaluate color under consistent lighting conditions — ideally standardized lighting
• Maintain consistent sample construction and preparation methods when creating new masters
• Ensure edge banding, substrate, and sheen all accurately represent true production conditions

This becomes especially critical with:
➡️ Whites and light neutrals
➡️ Low sheen finishes
➡️ Waterborne systems
➡️ Open grain stains
➡️ Large repeat production programs

A surprising number of “batch variation” complaints are actually standard variation problems.

Consistent color starts with consistent references.

TUESDAY PRODUCT HIGHLIGHT | NOVALK 892 EXTERIOR 2K WATERBORNE SYSTEM

As exterior season ramps up, more finishers are looking for coating systems that deliver premium durability without sacrificing application quality or appearance.

That’s where our Novalk 892 Exterior 2K Waterborne System continues to stand out.

This premium exterior waterborne technology has been extremely well received across a wide range of exterior projects thanks to its combination of performance, feel, and long-term durability.

Designed for high-end exterior wood applications where appearance retention and protection matter.

Key features and benefits include:

✔ Excellent exterior durability and weather resistance
✔ Premium 2K performance and chemical resistance
✔ Anti-scratch technology for improved wear resistance
✔ Smooth, silky application characteristics
✔ Fast dry and production-friendly workflow
✔ Excellent vertical hang and flow
✔ Available in clear and pigmented systems
✔ Tintable through the Novotint color platform

One of the biggest misconceptions in the market is that choosing waterborne means sacrificing performance.

Modern 2K exterior waterborne technology has evolved dramatically — offering finishers the ability to achieve premium appearance, durability, and protection while improving the overall finishing environment.

Whether you're spraying entry doors, exterior millwork, outdoor furniture, or architectural wood components, the right exterior system matters.

And in exterior finishing, long-term performance is everything.
