The endangered Key deer, a small subspecies of white-tailed deer, migrated to the Florida Keys from the mainland thousands of years ago during the Wisconsin Ice Age when a land bridge connected the islands. The earliest written account of the species dates back to the 1550s, recorded by shipwrecked Spanish sailor Hernando de Escalante Fontaneda. Once found throughout the Lower Keys, Key deer now live mainly on Big Pine Key and nearby islands, where fewer than 1,000 remain due to habitat loss, vehicle strikes, disease, illegal feeding, and the growing impacts of climate change.

The Eagle, a 287-foot Dutch freighter, was intentionally sunk off Islamorada in 1985 to create an artificial reef through a project led by the Florida Keys Artificial Reef Association and the Keys Association of Dive Operators. Resting in 70 to 110 feet of water, it quickly became one of the Keys’ most iconic dive sites—but in 1998, Hurricane Georges split the ship in two, exposing its interior and transforming it into an even richer habitat for marine life like Goliath groupers and tarpon.
