Thankful and proud to yet again participate in this years "Helping A Hero" through the Lennar Homes Palm Atlantic Division.
God Bless our troops and veterans!
Please see the below regarding our hero:
CPL Thomas Counihan, IV, USA (Ret) joined the Army out of South Florida at the age of 19 to be a Combat Engineer. He was heavily involved in sports and was captain of the swim team. He was also awarded a full ride Florida Bright Futures Scholarship before deciding to pursue a career in the Army. He left for Basic Training in October 2009. Feb of 2010 he was sent to his first duty station at Fort Polk, Louisiana with 4th BSTB 10th Mountain Division. His unit deployed to Logar, Afghanistan in October 2010 as a Route Clearing Package (RCP). After being one of the most successful units in clearing roads and villages of IEDβs and other traps, their job became even more dangerous with local tensions increasing after Osama Bin Laden was killed. On May 18. 2011 his vehicle was struck with a 180lb explosive wrapped in a 155 shell. He lost his right leg and during rehab found hope in thinking about the possibility of competing in adaptive sports. His dream is to compete in the Paralympics and perhaps have a professional career in surfing.
Tommie grew up helping his Dad who was a finish carpenter work on homes. I recently found out he even worked with his Dad when he was a finish carpenter for Lennar. He wants to be near the beach and in ready proximity to friends and family.
His longterm girlfriend left him after he was blown up and just a few months ago when his best friend got married, he realized he is ready to plant roots and think about his future. Moving home to Florida would provide the stability he wants in his life now that he is ready to build a forever life that combines his family, friends, and adaptive sports
