It’s gonna be one of those kinds of summer nights…I can feel it. Over the weekend & tonight we have started the summer night flying late night service calls as traffic picks up. We keep tires & tubes in stock since blowing a tire on the runway makes for a not so fun time. Also had a spark plug issue & an ignition lead problem as well.

Just a reminder…we do charge $250 for after hours call out fees & after hours rate at $180/hr. If we are not on other service calls or off airport jobs, we can usually depart with half an hr to your location. Travel charges by way of aircraft fuel reimbursement or mileage charges also apply.

We’ve been a bit busy going from state to state working on planes. Had to retire our daily runner white ram & upgraded to one 8yrs newer & 250k less miles. Still running state to state as needed not missing a beat.

What is the purpose of a good pre-buy? Is it to make sure the plane looks good, is legal, or is mechanically sound? “All of the above” is a pretty good answer. Would you accept a plane that has good compressions without thinking anything further on engine condition? Most pilots would say yes. But what about borescoping the cylinders including amount of valve opening?

What sounds like a good deal may actually be a ticking time bomb. On today’s ‘educate the pilot’ lesson, we emphasize the importance of not only a good pre-buy, but the importance of a good borescope & having a mechanic that knows the ins & outs of the aircraft model.

So…in these images you will hopefully spot a few things. What we found is spalling on a couple lifters that has chewed up two cam lobes. This results in insufficient valve operation to the extent we estimate the engine was producing approximately 70% of its rated power. This engine should have been making metal but at a 20yr average of less than 10hrs a year, it’s not hard to see how this could be easily overlooked, especially if the screen or filter was not removed for inspection. (We didn’t pull the screen or filter to validate this speculation)

Somewhere between Michigan & the Gulf of Mexico is a traveling FlyGuy doing his thing. A botched ElectroAir install that forced a sale of a plane becoming a buyers new headache (for a week longer til we fix the findings), & a jump on FrankenLake…3 totaled planes constructed into 1 going through post-purchase inspection with a lot of repairs to make it fly again after 9yrs of sitting dormant going through rebuild.

Engine was recently overhauled. Engine ran, plane almost flew, then get a call for consult. Oops…engine overhaul shop put the wrong O-520 cylinders on the engine.

It’s a “let’s fix yer uh-oh’s kinda month”. Owner was towing this Navajo with his truck & got going a bit too fast when the towbar slipped off. Oops. This one will leave mark on the pocketbook. No major structural damage fortunately but does need a new skin, stringer splice in 2 spots, stall strip, & then there’s the de-ice boot. We’ll have this one back on the calendar to complete repairs in a few weeks when parts come in.
