That orange sky isn't just something to photograph.

It's fine particulate smoke drifting down from the Canadian wildfires, small enough to work its way indoors through leaks, gaps, and older HVAC systems while you sleep.

There's an active Air Quality Alert out for our area right now. Most South Shore homeowners don't realize their HVAC system can help protect the air inside during a smoke event, but only if it's set up correctly. Three things make the biggest difference.

Install the highest efficiency filter your system safely supports, ideally MERV 13 or higher. Many basic 1 inch fiberglass filters do little against the fine particles in wildfire smoke.

Set your system to recirculate, or close any fresh air intake if it has one, and run the fan to continuously filter your indoor air.

Make sure your ductwork is sealed, so smoky air isn't being pulled in from attics, crawlspaces, or outside.

From Hingham to Plymouth, if your filter is overdue or you're not sure your ductwork is tight, this is exactly when your system matters most.

During heatwave conditions, East Coast Air applies a vulnerability-priority dispatch protocol. Priority One applies to elderly residents living alone, households with infants under 12 months, individuals dependent on medical equipment, and medically compromised residents. Priority Two covers all remaining emergency calls in chronological sequence.

August traditionally brings the highest contractor booking density of the year, as homeowners who deferred spring and July upgrades compete for late-summer installation slots.
