Healthy, climate-resilient old-growth forests store large amounts of carbon, increase biodiversity, reduce wildfire risks, enable subsistence and cultural uses, provide outdoor recreational opportunities and promote sustainable local economic development. Land management plans provide direction for how national forests and grasslands are managed for their many uses, including conservation. The proposed amendment will use the best available science, including Indigenous Knowledge, to provide consistent direction related to old-growth forest conditions across national forests and grasslands.

USDA today announced a proposal to amend all 128 forest land management plans to conserve and steward old-growth forest conditions on national forests and grasslands nationwide.

That money is destined to help overburdened communities and people with lower incomes electrify their homes, provide rebates and incentives to people buying electric bikes and cars, and help the trucking and freight industries decarbonize, among other things.

The state is still laying the framework for how the money will be disbursed. The most prominent direct benefit of the program is free transit for youth.

Business leaders and a group that advocated for Washington's carbon allowance market now want to get millions of dollars back into the hands of Washingtonians.

Tule River Tribal Councilman, Vernon Vera acknowledged tribal members who had traveled from across the country, from Wisconsin and Massachusetts, and elsewhere to be at the ceremony. He spoke about his great grandfather who was born on Rocky Hill and how industrious the Tule River people are and how they persevered to survive. He said, "We do not own the land, the land owns us."
