TEXAS AG/TIMBER EXEMPTION & ARENA SAND — WHAT TO KNOW

We get this question often, so here’s a quick guide to help our customers understand how Texas sales-tax rules apply to sand purchases.

A valid Texas Ag/Timber Number can be used only on items directly tied to producing agricultural or timber products for sale. This includes certain equipment, supplies, and materials used exclusively on a commercial farm, ranch, or timber operation.

Arena sand is generally not exempt.
Sand used for riding arenas, training areas, or general horse activities is classified as recreational or non-production use under state guidelines. Because it does not contribute directly to agricultural production, it typically does not qualify for the Ag/Timber sales-tax exemption.
