This week at PTS, we take a look at a project in Long Beach, NY!

Since Hurricane Sandy, FEMA has required all residences in designated flood zones to be raised above the 100 year floodplain elevation in order to qualify for flood insurance. This property was located in one of these flood zones, prompting the engineer of record (EOR) to design this new home’s foundation to be supported by MacLean Power Systems (MPS) helical piles. FSR, an MPS certified helical pile installer, was contracted to install the 16 MPS helical piles, which they accomplished in less than one working day.

This week at Premium Technical Services, we take a deep dive into a project inside a local business located in Massapequa, NY!

The employees at this Burlington location noticed the concrete floor in their back-room storage area was beginning to sag. After this was discovered, the slab was removed and helical piles were specified by the engineer of record (EOR) to prevent the new concrete slab from settling. FSR, a veteran MacLean Power Systems (MPS) certified helical pile installer, was contracted to install 57 helical piles in this storage area. Since this retail store was open to the public from 8am to 11pm, the helical pile installation needed to be done in overnight shifts. In addition, getting the installation equipment through the front entrance was not possible, so FSR needed to carefully guide their skid steer through a tight 8’ x 8’ rear entry to access the project site. Due to their low headroom capabilities and vibration-free installation process, helical piles were ideal for this project. FSR was able to successfully install all 57 MPS helical piles in less than 3 working days.

This week at Premium Technical Services, we take a look at a waterfront project in Huntington, NY!

The family living on this waterfront property noticed the old wooden retaining wall at the rear of their home was failing so they hired the engineers at Robinson & Muller Engineers to design a new retaining wall. The engineer chose to specify MacLean Power Systems (MPS) helical piles, due to their proven track record, to support the footing of the retaining wall.

FSR, an MPS certified helical pile installer, was contracted to install 19 MPS helical piles to support the new concrete retaining wall. The installation site, however, was on an incredibly steep incline and was less than 50 feet from Huntington Harbor, a location where most pile types would be impossible to install. Even with these challenging conditions, FSR utilized their portable drive equipment to successfully install the 19 MPS helical piles in less than two full working days.

This week at Premium Technical Services, we take a look at a project located at Con Edison's Astoria Yard. ConEd was planning to build a new storage tank facility at its Astoria yard. The engineers designing this structure specified the use of DDMs to support the new structure’s foundation. The EOR recommended the use of MacLean’s newest deep foundation product, the Excalibur™ pressure grouted displacement pile system. FSR, an MCP certified installer with 25 years of experience, was contracted to install the Excalibur™ piles for ConEd. The piles were planned to be installed through undocumented fill and embedded into dense glacial till. It was soon discovered that the soil underlaying the fill was much looser than expected. For similar deep foundation technologies this would pose a major problem and likely require an entire redesign of the structure’s foundation. This was not the case with the Excalibur piles. They were successfully installed to the original plan depth using the cutting-edge technology of the specialized Excalibur™ drive head, which rotates the Excalibur™ pile into the ground while simultaneously delivering grout under pressure through the ID of the pile. During the installation, the operator has an easy-to-follow pile readout in the cockpit of the excavator to make sure the equipment is maintaining the planned amount of grout flow and pressure as the piles are being advanced. A test pile was installed utilizing a mix design with an accelerator to shorten the cure time. A load test was performed after 7 days to 80 kips compression. The pile passed under a total of 0.6” of deflection. While this deflection was larger than planned assuming embedment in dense glacial till, it was still well within tolerance. From there, FSR successfully installed the remaining 25 piles in just one and a half days.
