Another knowledge tip for the day.

Traditional Heat Pumps (Less Efficient Below Freezing)
• Efficiency Decline: Start losing significant efficiency when temperatures drop below 40°F, with performance decreasing as it gets closer to freezing (32°F). ��
• Struggle Point: Many older or standard models become less effective and may rely heavily on backup electric resistance heat below 25°F, often not functioning well below 0°F.

Key Tips for Heat Pumps in Ice Storms:

Use Emergency Heat Wisely: If the outdoor unit is covered in more than 1+ inch of ice, switch to "Emergency" or "Auxiliary" heat. This stops the outdoor fan, preventing it from breaking against ice, and switches to indoor heating.

Clear Ice and Snow: Periodically remove ice/sleet from around the unit, especially the top, to allow airflow. Do not use sharp tools to chip ice.

Monitor Defrost Cycles: It is normal for a heat pump to make loud "whooshing" noises and steam during automatic defrost cycles.

Ensure Proper Airflow: Keep at least 2-3 feet of space around the unit. Do not fully cover the top of the unit as this restricts air.

Check for Damage: If the unit is making loud, unusual noises, it may be struggling with ice buildup and should be turned off.
