Trochoidal Milling with the CGS Tool EF-5 Tornado

The EF-5 Tornado is built for aggressive trochoidal milling — keeping radial engagement low while maximizing axial depth. That means less heat at the edge, improved chip evacuation, and longer tool life in alloy and carbon steels.

Key setup principles with EF-5:

* Radial engagement: Start at 5–10% of cutter diameter
* Axial depth: Push to 2–3× diameter, depending on holder rigidity
* Feed: Increase for radial chip thinning — don’t run conventional feed at low stepovers
* Toolpath: Dynamic/adaptive only; avoid burying the tool in full-width cuts

CGS’ own speed/feed chart for EF-5 in lower carbon steels shows HEM parameters around 3×D axial, ~0.07×D radial, and ~450 SFM, confirming it’s optimized for that deep/light engagement strategy.

Roughing vs. finishing end mills can be confusing if you’re new to machining, so here’s a simple way to look at it:
• Roughing end mills remove a lot of material fast. They have fewer, larger teeth and a more aggressive shape, which makes them great for early stages but leaves a rougher surface.
• Finishing end mills focus on accuracy and surface quality. They have more, sharper teeth, cut slower, and leave a clean, smooth finish.
Most jobs use both: rough first to shape, then finish to refine.
