There's a lot going on in the world right now and sometimes, it can feel pretty heavy. But we think today's post is going to give you a bit of a reprieve.

Earlier this month, Tennessee Titan players Jacob Martin, Jermaine Johnson and Truman Jones dropped in at the Monroe Carell Jr. Children's Hospital at Vanderbilt in Nashville to visit with some of the children receiving treatment there. There were plenty of smiles ... from both players and patients. "I met the best tattoo artist in all of Nashville," Johnson said of one of the patients, a peel-off tattoo still visible on his skin. "She works for free, too."

Growing up, identical twins Travan and Travis Jasper were two of the poorest kids on their Richmond, VA, block. Today, 40-some years later, they're back in their hometown serving as co-directors of the Chippenham Hospital ER. Stormwater management has never been more important, especially in Memphis. Recent storms left many Memphians dealing with dangerous waterlogged streets, flooded basements, and damage to neighborhoods.

ABES Engineering is proud to play a critical role in improving stormwater management in Memphis. We are a key team member for the City of Memphis Stormwater Management Program, a program responsible for managing the schedule and completion of basin studies for 37 large master plan areas throughout the Memphis and Shelby County area. The program is responsible for identifying potential stormwater improvement projects from the studies to alleviate area flooding and provide an overall positive community benefit.

Who wants to talk about sewage? No one, most likely. But ensuring that people have safe, working sewage collection systems is paramount for any community. Without it .... well, we don't want to think about that.

ABES Contracting has played a significant role in improving sewage pumping stations in Shelby County on projects funded through the American Rescue Plan Act. Shelby County Government hired ABES Contracting in 2025 to improve the following pumping stations: Sledge Road, Armour Road, Chartridge and Mt. Pisgah.

This image is from the Armour Road pumping station project. ABES Contracting removed the existing metal pump station enclosure as well as the existing wet well and installed a new fiberglass wet well along with new submersible pumps. Our team installed precast vaults for the valves and flow meter as well as a guardrail to protect the site from the adjacent roadway. We're proud to share that we finished the four pumping station projects in September. These types of projects may not be sexy to talk about, but we realize just how critical they are to our community. And we appreciate Shelby County's trust in us to get them done right!

Together, we can make the world a better place, and these Ohio Gen Zers are showing us how!

When a 16-year-old in Powell, Ohio, learned that U.S. hospitals throw away thousands of pounds of medical supplies each year because they won't be used by their expiration date, he decided to take action. Ben Kurian created Project MedBridge, a distribution organization operated entirely by volunteers, to distribute the supplies to underserved hospitals around the world. https://bit.ly/3VAccgt

"Most of the established medical supply redistribution organizations, or MSROs, like Project C.U.R.E. and World Medical Relief (WMR), are staffed full-time by adults operating at industrial scale. But around the country, a quiet network of young people has taken up the same cause: pulling medical surplus out of the waste stream and redirecting it toward people who need it, both in faraway countries and at underserved U.S. clinics. What’s striking about this newer wave is that it’s run entirely by students, and almost entirely by volunteers — teenagers and Gen Z youth squeezing warehouse shifts in between classes and exams to right a wrong they see unfolding on their own doorsteps."

ABES Contracting is serving as the prime contractor on the ongoing Big Hill Pond State Park campground project in Pocahontas, TN.

Big Hill Pond State Park is known for its popular fishing lake, boardwalk and campsites. The State of Tennessee wanted to ensure that all could enjoy the camping experience there; opting to make the campground and bathrooms ADA accessible. ABES Contracting's tasks on the project have included demolition of the existing campground and a complete renovation of every campsite as well as the existing bathroom building.

Big Hill Pond State Park is a special place, enjoyed by so many. It's an honor to play a role in improving the access and aesthetics of the campground and surrounding areas.

ABES Engineering CEO Emmanuel Tuombe kept busy at WEFTEC, meeting with old friends, clients, and partners and making new connections, including Matthias Predl with PREDL GmbH. Predl's booth spotlighted the company's concrete protection lining systems for wastewater infrastructure. The conference featured so many amazing and innovative solutions to water infrastructure challenges, both at booths and during presentations. It's exciting to see the water industry innovating and adapting to water infrastructure issues. It's a critical need in our country and our world, and we're glad to see so many talented water professionals giving it their focus.
