𝐖𝐡𝐲 𝐈𝐜𝐞 𝐆𝐮𝐚𝐫𝐝 𝐌𝐚𝐭𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐬 (𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐖𝐡𝐲 𝐎𝐧𝐞 𝐑𝐨𝐰 𝐈𝐬𝐧’𝐭 𝐄𝐧𝐨𝐮𝐠𝐡)

The edge of the roof is where winter weather does its quiet work. Snow melts, refreezes, and forces water in the wrong direction. If there’s no ice guard to stop it, that moisture settles into the wood and starts breaking it down layer by layer.

You can see the result in the first photo:
rotted decking, soft edges, delamination, and wood that crumbles in your hands.

The part most homeowners don’t know is that Ohio building code requires ice guard to extend 3 feet inside the 𝙝𝙚𝙖𝙩𝙚𝙙 𝙨𝙥𝙖𝙘𝙚 of the home.

That means we’re not measuring from the gutter line—we’re measuring from the warm wall of the house inward.
And because most homes have an overhang, a single 3‑foot roll of ice guard doesn’t reach far enough to meet code.

So to do it right, you need a second row. Not because it’s extra or an upgrade but because that’s what it takes to actually protect the roof deck and meet Ohio’s safety standards.

Ice guard is the first line of defense against ice dams.
Shingles shed water down.
Ice guard stops water from moving backward.

That’s why we install full ice guard on every roof we do- because the cost of doing it right is always less than the cost of repairing what happens when it's skipped.

𝐖𝐡𝐲 𝐕𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐢𝐥𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐌𝐚𝐭𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐬 𝐌𝐨𝐫𝐞 𝐓𝐡𝐚𝐧 𝐘𝐨𝐮 𝐓𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐤:

Most people don’t think about attic ventilation, but it quietly protects your roof every single day.

That strip along the peak of your roof is a ridge vent, and it does way more than people realize. It basically lets your attic breathe so your roof doesn’t cook, rot, or ice‑dam itself into early failure.

Here’s what proper ventilation actually does:
1. 𝙆𝙚𝙚𝙥𝙨 𝙨𝙝𝙞𝙣𝙜𝙡𝙚𝙨 𝙛𝙧𝙤𝙢 𝙗𝙖𝙠𝙞𝙣𝙜
Attics can hit 140°+ in summer. That heat destroys shingles from underneath long before you ever see a problem on top.
2. 𝙇𝙚𝙩𝙨 𝙢𝙤𝙞𝙨𝙩𝙪𝙧𝙚 𝙚𝙨𝙘𝙖𝙥𝙚
Showers, laundry, cooking — all that moisture rises. If it can’t get out, it sits in your attic and causes mold, rot, and soft decking.
3. 𝙃𝙚𝙡𝙥𝙨 𝙥𝙧𝙚𝙫𝙚𝙣𝙩 𝙞𝙘𝙚 𝙙𝙖𝙢𝙨
A cooler attic = less melting and refreezing = fewer ice dams.
4. 𝙋𝙧𝙤𝙩𝙚𝙘𝙩𝙨 𝙮𝙤𝙪𝙧 𝙨𝙝𝙞𝙣𝙜𝙡𝙚 𝙬𝙖𝙧𝙧𝙖𝙣𝙩𝙮
Manufacturers require proper ventilation. If it’s wrong, the warranty doesn’t mean much.
5. 𝙃𝙚𝙡𝙥𝙨 𝙮𝙤𝙪𝙧 𝙚𝙣𝙚𝙧𝙜𝙮 𝙗𝙞𝙡𝙡𝙨
A cooler attic means your AC isn’t fighting trapped heat.

This is why we don’t rush ridge vents.
They’re small, but they add years to the life of your roof.

If you’re not sure whether your attic is ventilated correctly, we can check it and walk you through what we see.
