Why is curved steel railing harder to fabricate than straight?

Because there's no repeating the same cut. On this ODOT project, each section of the 800-foot steel railing needed to be built to its own unique radius. This allowed the finished line to match the bridge's geometry exactly instead of approximately with a bend. Precision like that starts at the fabrication stage, not on site.
