Today I had the opportunity to hear Dr. Julie McEnery speak about NASA’s Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope, and it was genuinely inspiring.
The Roman Space Telescope is one of NASA’s next great observatories. While telescopes like Hubble and Webb have transformed how we see the universe, Roman will take a different approach, surveying enormous portions of the sky at once and collecting an incredible amount of scientific data.
Some things I learned:
✨ Its field of view is about 100× larger than Hubble’s infrared camera.
🌌 It will help scientists study dark matter and dark energy, which together make up most of our universe.
🪐 It’s expected to discover thousands of new exoplanets, giving us a better understanding of planetary systems beyond our own.
As these missions generate more and more data, I believe AI and machine learning will become an essential part of scientific discovery, not replacing scientists, but helping them uncover patterns, detect anomalies, and make discoveries that might otherwise take years to find.
It’s an exciting time to be in engineering, and moments like today remind me why I love working in this field.
The future of space exploration isn’t just about building incredible spacecraft, it’s also about building the intelligent systems that help us understand the universe they explore.
