UPDATE: (2:24 p.m.) St. John the Baptist Parish officials lift mandatory evacuation.
LSP Emergency Services Technicians are on-site assisting with the Marathon fire incident. A 2-mile evacuation has been ordered, please see below for additional information from Marathon representatives.
"Marathon Petroleum personnel and local emergency responders continue responding to a naphtha release and fire at a storage tank at the company’s Garyville, Louisiana, refinery. The release and fire are contained within the refinery’s property and there have been no injuries. As a precautionary measure, St. John the Baptist Parish is requiring residents within a two-mile radius of the part of the refinery closest to the fire to temporarily evacuate to locations the Parish is making available. For more information about the evacuation order, please contact the Parish emergency management at 985-652-2222. As always, our main priority is to ensure the safety of our employees and contractors, our neighbors within our surrounding community, first responders, and to limit environmental impact. An investigation will be conducted to determine the cause of the release."
