The GE Frame 7 Gas Turbine is a 60-HZ unit, its 50-HZ counterpart is the GE Frame 9 Gas Turbine.

This Gas Turbine is also known as the MS700/MS7001.

➡ ACQUIP has extensive experience working on almost all the variations of this unit: 7B, 7C, 7E, 7EA, 7C/E, 7F, 7FA, 7FB.

➡ Drawing on our extensive experience and technical expertise, we have successfully performed internal alignment, shaft alignment, and dynamic movement studies on GE Frame 7 gas turbines on multiple occasions.

INTERNAL ALIGNMENT:

ACQUIP understands key elements of the GE Frame 7 Gas Turbine that have to be addressed in order to achieve a successful final alignment.

An internal alignment is performed in the course a major outage. Additional reasons to perform an internal alignment are vibration issues, evidence of rubbing, unit up-rate, catastrophic failure or component replacement. These subsequent factors will usually lead to a major outage.

There are varying levels of internal alignment on a Frame 7

• Document Alignment Position
• Alignment of Bearing 2 and 3
• Casing alignment
• Exhaust Cas Slippage Correction

The challenge isn’t always getting a measurement ...It’s measuring what actually matters.

Laser alignment systems are excellent for shafts and couplings. ➡ But steam turbine diaphragm alignment presents a different geometry, and a different problem.

You’re not simply chasing a straight line.
(You’re establishing true concentricity inside the turbine casing.)

And during an outage, conditions rarely make that easy:

• Limited line of sight
• Tight internal clearances
• Compressed outage schedules
• Casing conditions that can complicate the alignment process

That’s where the ERAG (Electronic Radial Alignment Gauge), also known as CAT, offers a different approach.
..Rather than relying on a projected laser beam, ERAG is designed to provide direct radial measurements for turbine alignment applications, helping technicians evaluate diaphragm position relative to the established turbine centerline.

No laser beam to maintain.
No line-of-sight dependency.
No unnecessary complexity.

Just actionable measurement data for the alignment decision that needs to be made.

(?) Why it matters during an outage

When every hour counts, the best technology isn’t necessarily the most sophisticated one.

It’s the one that fits the application.

ERAG provides a practical solution for steam turbine diaphragm alignment where access, geometry, and outage conditions can make conventional laser methods less practical.

💡 The takeaway?

Modern turbine alignment isn’t about putting a laser on every problem.

It’s about understanding the geometry first, and choosing the measurement method that makes sense for it.

Sometimes, the right alignment doesn’t need a laser at all.

The laser tracker is only part of the story...

ACQUIP brings ↪ the “what now?”
..What do the measurements actually tell us?..What needs to move?..What happens when the machine goes from cold to operating conditions?..(And how do we turn all that data into a decision the team can actually use?)

That’s the difference.

Metrology is the tool. 🏁 Solving the problem is the job.

From turbine alignment and dimensional inspections to dynamic movement studies and outage support, ACQUIP works where precision meets real-world machinery.

(Not measurements for the sake of measurements.)

🏁 Answers that help keep equipment moving.

A D11 steam turbine is currently the most common steam turbine that

ACQUIP performs internal alignments on during a major outage.

GE D11 units have specific characteristics that make them different than other steam turbines. 🗒️ 🔎 We pay attention to these details during an outage that will determine the success of the project. ACQUIP has experience and has developed special techniques and procedures to contend with these common problems:

• Front Standard elevation
• N2 Packing box fit
• HP/IP Shell distortion
• Diaphragm Dishing
• Horizontal Joint deflection
• HP/IP Rotor Sag

↪ Internal Alignment – Diaphragm Alignment

ACQUIP performs diaphragm alignment on a GE D11 during a major outage. Successful steam turbine internal alignment consists of 3 elements:

1. As found Position
2. Component Target calculation
3. Alignment Moves

On some steam turbines ACQUIP performs an Express Alignment, this is a theoretical Tops on alignment. An express alignment can only be performed if the four corners of the horizontal joint of the steam turbine cylinder occupies the same plane

When each component is measured we are gathering thousands of data
points. This means we are not only recording 2-dimensional centerline
data. In the course of taking the alignment readings we also get:

• Axial Position
• Out of roundness/distortion of diaphragms and packing
• Angle or askew of bearings and packing heads

➡ Measurements are analyzed and the target positions are applied.

Target component Calculation considers:

✔ Tops on -Tops off Shift
✔ Bore Presets
✔ Rotor Sag
✔ Rotor Position Readings
✔ Bearing Moves

**Flat surfaces are convenient. The field doesn’t care.**

(Curved turbine casings. Sloped mounting points. Tight spaces where every inch matters.)
..These aren’t exceptions in industrial alignment. (They’re the reality.)

And when your laser tracker or measuring equipment needs a stable setup, improvising the mounting point shouldn’t be part of the measurement process.

That’s the 🏁 thinking behind MAGIE®.

Its adaptable magnetic mounting design helps metrology teams establish a secure platform across challenging surfaces, orientations, and confined spaces, so they can focus on the measurement, (not fight the setup.)

Curved? Adapt.
Sloped? Position.
Confined? Get in there.

Three different challenges. One smarter approach to measurement setup.

In real-world industrial alignment, there’s no perfectly controlled environment.

↪ There are tight spaces.
↪ Different surfaces.
↪ Complex setups.
↪ Large rotating equipment.
↪ And zero room for “close enough.”

That’s where MAGIE® makes a difference.

From shop-floor setups to field turbine alignment, MAGIE is designed 🏁 to give technicians the flexibility, stability, and🔒 precision needed to take accurate measurements where the work actually happens.

The benefit?

✔ Less setup complexity.
✔ More confidence in your measurements.
✔ Less time fighting the setup.
✔ More time getting the machine aligned.

And when you're working with **steam turbines, gas turbines, rotating equipment, and critical industrial machinery**, that difference matters.

Because remember that alignment isn’t just about hitting a number.

(It’s about being confident that the number is right.)

We're curious...What’s the biggest challenge your team faces when setting up alignment equipment in the field?

**The rotor is already in place. Why measure around it?**

The **ERAG / CAT** takes a different approach to turbine internal alignment.

Instead of relying solely on indirect alignment methods, the tool allows you ↪ to measure **diaphragm misalignment with the rotor in place**, giving you a direct view of radial dimensional variation.

✔ Move the tool through the packing groove.
✔ Let the contact points follow the rotor and diaphragm.
✔ Read the variation directly from the display.

(That's the advantage of having a measurement tool designed around the actual geometry you're trying to verify.)

🔒 With resolution down to **0.0001"**, the ERAG is engineered for the tight tolerances that come with turbine alignment.
