3D Printed Mini Turbo Jet
China has successfully completed the maiden flight of a 3D-printed miniature turbojet engine in Inner Mongolia, marking the country’s first flight-validated engine in the 160-kg thrust class entirely manufactured using additive methods and topology optimization.
Developed by the state-owned Aero Engine Corporation of China (AECC), the engine’s design leverages computational modeling to optimize material distribution, enabling the creation of complex components without traditional casting or forging.
While Western firms have long used 3D printing for select parts, AECC’s full-engine application highlights a potential path to reduce reliance on foreign engines, though scaling production will demand advances in materials, quality control, and certification.
