Zygo Corporation

Zygo Corporation Zygo is a global leader in advanced optical metrology and ultra-precise optical components.

From laser interferometers and 3D optical profilers to precision optics exceeding one meter in size, Zygo’s technologies enable innovation across industries Zygo Corporation is a global leader in the design and manufacture of advanced optical metrology systems and ultra-precise optical components and assemblies. Our Metrology business segment is comprised of three major groups: optical surface pro

filers, laser interferometers, and stage position metrology. The products and systems produced by these groups employ various optical phase analysis techniques for measuring displacement, surface shape and texture, and film thickness. Applications for our metrology products are diverse, and include precision machining, optical manufacturing, and semiconductor manufacturing, as well as many others. Our Optics business segment is comprised of two major groups: Electro-Optics and Optical Components. These groups leverage ZYGO's expertise in optical design and assembly, and high-volume manufacturing of precision optical components and systems, for aerospace, defense, medical, and industrial applications. Founded in 1970, and headquartered in Middlefield, Connecticut, USA, ZYGO's global operations are supported by approximately 500 dedicated and highly-skilled individuals around the world. Throughout its history, ZYGO has been driven by a passion for innovation, as evidenced by approximately 1,200 patents awarded since the Company's founding. In 2014, ZYGO became part of the Ultra Precision Technologies Division of AMETEK, Inc., a leading global manufacturer of electronic instruments and electro-mechanical devices. With annual sales over $4 billion, AMETEK has more than 15,000 colleagues at nearly 150 operating locations, and a network of sales, service and support locations across the United States and in 30 other countries. ZYGO enjoys mutually-beneficial relationships with its AMETEK sister companies, collaborating on technologies and sharing resources in order to provide the best possible experience for our customers. While we are a part of the AMETEK family, we are still the same Zygo Corporation that you have known and trusted for over 45 years, committed to serving your precision metrology and optics needs now and in the future.

Zygo interferometers have two tools for minimizing the impact of environmental vibrations: our QPSI and Dynaphase modes

Our patented QPSI technology builds on the foundations of phase-shifting interferometry (PSI) to eliminate noise and ripple in phase data due to small vibrations, providing reliable data that would otherwise be noisy with traditional PSI acquisition

QPSI measurements require no special setup or calibration, have no reduction in spatial resolution, and cycle times are typically similar to standard PSI measurements

DynaPhase mode further reduces the impact of vibration and air turbulence for highly sensitive applications like cryogenic and vacuum chamber testing, telescope components, and tower applications with long path lengths

But when should you use each mode? QPSI is a model-based acquisition mode and separates mechanical vibrations from the rest of the data through signal analysis

QPSI and DynaPhase both increase reliability in bad environments, but QPSI is more vibration robust while DynaPhase is fully vibration resistant

However, the single frame acquisition of DynaPhase results in lower spatial resolution. PSI and QPSI will provide the most precise data, but in the presence of high amounts of vibration where phase shifting fails, DynaPhase becomes the best option

“Superpolishing” is often described in terms of angstrom‑level roughness, but its real value lies in controlling the spatial frequencies that directly limit optical system performance

Our new blog dives into the nuances of large area superpolishing flat optics, key applications where this level of precision is necessary, and Zygo's superpolishing capabilities

Learn more: https://ow.ly/Z72f50ZcqqE

At Zygo, our large-area superpolishing capabilities are the result of decades of experience in optics fabrication, refined process control, and metrology that spans the entire spatial frequency spectrum from full clear aperture down to angstrom-scale features

The EUSPEN conference in Poland was a great chance to connect with leaders in precision engineering and nanotechnology

We highlighted out new Qualifire® Laser Interferometer line, which makes measuring surface form error and transmitted wavefront error easier than ever

These systems build on Zygo's long history as a pioneer in phase-shifting interferometry while adding new features that improve ease of use including:

- Coherent Artifact Reduction
- Plano Cavity Autofocus
- Stable Zoom for no shift in focus or image centering from 1X to 3X zoom
- Smart Accessories that automatically sets the instrument lateral resolution based on the accessory installed and, for Smart Transmission Spheres, the radius of curvature of the part

Our Asphere+ software simplifies measuring the complex surfaces of aspheric surfaces using Zygo metrology

Asphere+ analyses include surface deviations from the nominal aspheric equation, best-fit surface calculations, and quantifying rotational symmetry

This allows for process control during aspheric optics manufacturing

It turns out that today is National Cheese Day in the US, and we decided to celebrate by measuring a piece of mozzarella cheese with one of our NewView ™ 3D Optical Profilers 🧀

Mozzarella is a pasta filata cheese (meaning it's stretched as it's made), which often aligns protein fibers in the stretch direction

You can see that here, with a good amount of the voids in this image stretching from the top left to the bottom right

Our 3D Optical Profilers typically aren’t inspecting cheese though, and are instead measuring microstructures, optics, machined parts, and a lot more

They can quickly measure features from sub-nanometer to micron-levels in a single operation

Happy World Metrology Day from Zygo!

World Metrology Day is observed annually on May 20 to celebrate the science of measurement and its critical role in our daily lives, global trade, and scientific discovery

The date commemorates the signing of the Metre Convention in Paris in 1875, which established the foundation for a globally unified measurement system

Zygo's Laser Interferometers and 3D Optical Profilers use light for accurate, non-contact measurement of everything from the topography and wavefront error of optics, to the roughness of machined surfaces, to the structure of bacterial biofilms
