May is Preservation Month – a time to recognize the places, stories, and craftsmanship that help connect us to our shared history.
🏘️
This year carries special meaning as the United States celebrates the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence. It is a fitting time to reflect on the places that help tell a fuller American story – places that hold memory, spark conversation, bring people together, and remind us of the ideals we continue working toward.
🏘️
Preservation is about more than protecting old buildings or historic landmarks. It is about honoring the people, communities, and stories connected to them. This month, we celebrate the places that matter, the hands that care for them, and the work that helps carry our past forward into the future.

Old wood windows in particular get blamed for poor efficiency and therefore must go - but is that accurate? Learn more:

Restoring historic wood windows minimizes waste, conserves embodied carbon, and preserves high-quality materials.

When a war memorial is damaged, the loss is about more than stone or metal. These monuments stand to honor service, sacrifice, and the people of a community whose names deserve to be remembered. They are meant to stand with dignity – and when they do not, people feel it. That is exactly what the World War I and World War II Roll of Honor memorials mean to the community of Meriden, Connecticut. We've just completed restoration on these two memorials following significant damage after being struck by automobiles. Now they're restored, cleaned up, reinforced, and ready to make it another century or more!

Did Napoleon die from his wallpaper?! Maybe that's an urban myth...but some people did!

In the Victorian era, wallpaper could β€” and sometimes did β€” kill. The culprit was in the colors β€” specifically, a set of wildly popular pigments known as arsenical greens. Beginning in the late 18th century, chemists discovered how to make vivid green dyes from copper arsenite. The first, Sche...
