When Bourdon Forge opened its doors in 1969, its founding ambition was straightforward: to manufacture reliable, high-quality parachute hardware. Over time, that mission would expand, but the core focus on safety, strength, and precision would remain unchanged.
In its early years, Bourdon Forge’s work centered on parachute rings, adjusters, adapters, and related components. From that foundation, it branched into broader safety hardware, including fall arrest systems, auto racing restraint parts, and other life-critical applications. Many of the designs the company first made decades ago are still in use today in personal rescue, fall arrest, and racing systems.
As markets evolved, Bourdon Forge invested in advanced manufacturing tools. It uses CAD/CAM and CADIF (Computer Aided Design for Impact Forging) to design parts, then brings them to life with CNC machining and forging techniques. The company’s capability spans from small components weighing a few ounces to large forgings up to 500 pounds, and it works with materials ranging from carbon and alloy steels to titanium and specialty heat-resistant alloys.
Growth was built not just through new product lines but through enduring partnerships. Over time, Bourdon Forge has served customers across aerospace, nuclear, marine, petrochemical, fi****ms, and parachute and safety industries. Today it maintains relationships with more than 500 customers worldwide.
Despite its technical sophistication, Bourdon Forge has chosen to remain family-owned and independently operated. The company attributes much of its success to its workforce of more than 180 employees, many with long tenure, who collaborate closely with leadership. This continuity helps preserve institutional knowledge and the culture of responsiveness and quality that the firm was founded on.
From modest beginnings in Middletown, Connecticut, to supplying safety hardware around the globe, Bourdon Forge’s history is a story of steady evolution, technical diligence, and a firm commitment to the kinds of parts that protect human life. As PIA celebrates its Sustaining Members, it is especially fitting to highlight a company whose roots are anchored in the very heart of the parachute and safety hardware world.
