Remember that garage we tore down? Along with a carport, it came down to make room for this addition on a Gun Lake home.

The site is now dug out and being prepped for a helical pier foundation. Helical piers are steel shafts that get screwed down into the ground until they reach soil that can carry the weight of the structure, and the addition is built on top of them.

A big thank you to GVL Excavating for all the work they’ve done for us on this one.

This Fife Lake cottage is down to the house wrap.

The old aluminum siding came off, and the rotted windows came out with it. The new windows went back in using the same layout, so that gable wall is still almost all glass facing the lake.

With the walls open, every window got flashing tape on all sides and the house was wrapped before anything goes back over it. That layer is what keeps water from getting behind the siding and into the framing. It’s a lot easier to get right when you can see everything.

Starting demo of the old to make way for the new.

The garage and carport on this property are coming down to make room for an addition and a new barn. Demo isn't the pretty part of a project, but taking the old structures all the way down gives the new build a clean start.

We'll share more as the addition and barn start taking shape.

The old shower in this home was failing, so it came out and was replaced with a new tiled shower on a solid base pan.

The walls are tiled in herringbone, which takes some planning up front. The layout has to be worked out before anything gets set so the pattern meets right at the corners and the cuts stay even at the top and the base.

There's a recessed niche with two shelves built into the wall, a rain head and handheld on the fixture wall, and glass with a frosted band for privacy. The solid base means a one-piece floor with no grout lines to keep clean.

This basement kitchenette started with open framing and rough plumbing and finished with custom cabinetry, quartz counters, tile backsplash, and a fully usable setup.

Watching heavy equipment for hours? Best day ever if you're a child. My son tagged along on site while the septic and drain field went in — big machines, deep trenches, and a front-row seat to how it's really built. Even our own house isn't storm-proof.

A fallen tree took out windows, siding, and landscaping — and gave us a front-row seat to what our clients go through when disaster hits close to home. Getting the final window back in took some patience (and a few small hands holding the level), but watching the culprit go up in flames afterward felt like the perfect send-off.

Trim work is all that's left now. Michigan weather keeps us humble — and reminds us why we treat every repair with the same care, no matter whose house it is.
