How Victory Keeps Crews Safe on U-Turn Wells

A U-Turn well squeezes more production out of a single surface location by sending the wellbore through a full 180-degree turn underground. That turn is also where the drill string takes on the most twisting stress of the whole job.

Victory has several tools for managing that stress, and the right combination depends on the client and the well:

➡️ Torque tubes absorb twisting forces between the top drive and the drill string, reducing wear and the risk of stuck pipe or downhole failure through the curve. They deliver up to 60% greater efficiency compared to a standard static line swivel.
➡️ 150 power swivels add torque for working through the turn.
➡️ Higher-capacity pumps provide the pressure and volume that deeper, longer U-Turn wells call for.

✅ All crew members except some new hires have their required safety courses and acknowledgements completed (this is the only rig to accomplish this without fail).

Weather in the field can change quickly, whether operations are in the Permian Basin or Utah’s high desert.

At Victory Well Servicing, preparation starts before conditions shift.

Our crews are briefed on weather response procedures before work begins, so everyone understands how to respond when visibility, air quality, or electrical activity creates additional risk.

➡️ When lightning is nearby, work stops, and crews move to designated shelter areas until the threat has cleared.

➡️ During sandstorms, crews secure equipment, monitor conditions and air quality, protect exposed areas, and pause non-essential work until the storm has passed.

The rig manager or crew lead is responsible for calling the stand-down and confirming when conditions are safe for work to resume. That decision is based on verified field conditions, not guesswork or schedule pressure.

These procedures are part of the job plan and are communicated before the crew steps onto location. Clear expectations help everyone respond quickly, stay coordinated, and protect one another when conditions change.

After the Audit: How the Client Relationship Develops

Rig 106 and Rig 101 are working for a major client. The audits are done, the crews are deployed, and the program is running. Now Rig 107, a total Level 4 rebuild, brand new from the ground up, is coming to the yard for its audit in order to replace Rig 101, which will come back for its own Level 4 rebuild.

And even though Rig 107 has never been on location, it goes through the full client audit before it goes to work. New equipment doesn’t change the standard. At Victory Well Servicing, every rig that goes to work for a major client is confirmed ready before it leaves the yard.

That’s the continuous improvement cycle in action. Major client audit standards evolve on an ongoing basis; requirements get refined, new items get added, and the bar moves between engagements. Victory’s job is to stay current with that process and contribute to how it develops.

What that looks like in practice:

➡️ A formal debrief at the close of every engagement; both sides assess what worked and what carries forward

➡️ Victory doesn’t push back on updated requirements; when the standard changes, the team adapts

➡️ Regular check-ins built into the schedule; weekly reviews, open lines at every level, issues closed out with a timeline

Earlier this year, Victory Well Servicing began the client audit process for a major operator program. Rig 106 went through the yard first, undergoing a comprehensive inspection that covered every piece of equipment, every safety system, and every training record against the client’s full requirements.

It passed and went to work. Rig 101 followed close behind, going through the same process with the same rigour. It passed and went to work.

Two rigs. Two audits. Both fully prepared before the first shift started.
