Just to let people know, we’ve joined the 21st Century and gotten rid of our landline. I still have the same mobile number, 859-621-6416.

Thanks to all of my curious friends who check in on me occasionally. Dad started this company in 1956. In business for 70 years come this summer.
His first project was to build a house for some friends. It was in the country along Versailles Road in Lexington. It belonged to Grant and MaryAnn Fox. My sister Cassandra was born while he was installing the masonry, making it easy to date our beginning .
That country home site is now inside of New Circle Road and the home has been demolished for new development.
Dad passed in 1992, running the company for 36 years. 2026 will mark 34 years for me as head of our company.
God has been so kind to allow us to stay in business for 70 years. I have met many kind and wonderful people over these years. But the best was the man who began it all. He was honest, fair, demanding and generous .
Since his passing , several men have gone out of their way to let me know how much my Dad meant to them. One even walked onto a job site just to tell me that he was the nicest man he ever worked for.
God has also blessed me with many talented and hardworking employees. I would not be where I am without them.
But after 70 years, 2026 will be our last. Like that first home Dad bulit for his friends, I am getting old and it’s time to make room for what comes after.
Retirement for now, but I’m ready for what comes after that too. Kind of looking forward to it, truth be told. You see, my Father promised me that He is already building a place for me. No, not my Dad, my Father. It will never get old. It will never need my “restoration skills.” It will last forever.

2 Corinthians 5:1
For we know that if the tent that is our earthly home is destroyed, we have a building from God, a house not made with hands, eternal in the heavens.

Is He preparing one for you? Hope to see you there!

John 14:3
And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and will take you to myself, that where I am you may be also.

John 3:16
For God so loved the world, that He gave His only Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish, but have eternal life.

What you might think is from the page of Captain Obvious, Gilpin Masonry will be closed this week. Santa may be able to deal with snowy or icy roofs, but we can’t. We will return to Helms Place when weather permits.

Have you ever had one of those days? You’re busy, things are getting marked off of your “to do” list. It’s all going so well until you go into the closet to look for something that you need. Then the browsing starts. (Pre-computer type of browsing.)

Huh, don’t need that any more.

Oh I forgot about this.

Why did I order more? I already have some.

What’s in this box? Old pictures! Isn’t he cute!
Three hours later, nothing else has been done, but now you’re posting on Facebook.

It was unusual, to say the least, to find rotted framing holding up a masonry coping. Not much to do but buy some treated lumber, flex our carpentry skills, install quality flashing and put it all back together again. It is now in better shape than when it was first built.

Almost complete.

After the recent storms, our appreciation of linemen, tree removal experts, crane operators, fire/rescue workers, and roofers is brought into sharp focus.
My appreciation and admiration went way up this week when we were asked to lend a hand for an emergency repair.
A large branch, from a massive ginkgo tree crashed onto the roof of Berry Hill Mansion, offices for Kentucky’s Division of Historic Properties. The heavy limestone coping in the photo was suspended over a bay window below and held in place by the weight of the branch.
So thankful for the expert saw man from Woodland and the smooth operator from D Crane. What did I do? I attached the stone as best I could …and prayed the entire time. Thank you Lord!

Trying to finish up an old home before cold weather sets in. This is the condition of the limestone steps when we arrived and when completed. This was a repair and cleaning. No damaged stones were replaced.

This chimney had been neglected for decades. The "repairs" it had received were more hurtful than helpful. The smeared mortar on the brick and stone made it appear hopeless. We took the stone and brick apart, salvaging all of the pieces. It was rebuilt to match the original design and dimensions. The stone cap now crowns this chimney at Whitehall State Park for many decades to come.
