At the conclusion of Heavy Civil Day two weeks ago in Casper, WY, four outstanding students, two from Converse County High School and two from Worland High School, stayed behind to participate in a pilot competition that could help reshape how Wyoming students enter the heavy civil construction industry after graduation.
A SkillsUSA Heavy Equipment Competition was held as a test event. The pilot competition, the first of its kind in Wyoming, marked the final step toward establishing an official SkillsUSA Heavy Equipment program in the state.
The students demonstrated their operating skills on a skid steer, mini excavator, loader, and dozer while being evaluated by Oftedal Construction supervisors and Caterpillar trainers. Each participant walked away with valuable hands-on experience, professional instruction, (DON'T BACK DRAG WITH A DOZER!) increased operating knowledge, and a bag full of Oftedal swag.
A huge thank you goes out to Converse County School District #1 CTE Department Head Jarred Bower and Worland High School automotive instructor Josh Keller for their leadership, dedication, and commitment to moving this new program forward. Our shared vision for this program reached a major milestone during Heavy Civil Day, and we are excited about the opportunities this initiative will create for future generations entering the heavy civil industry. In addition, Oftedal’s industry partners, Wyoming Machinery, Komatsu, and RDO, are rock-solid supporters of this program and its mission to develop the next generation of heavy civil equipment operators and industry professionals.
Beginning next year, the competition is expected to become an official statewide SkillsUSA Heavy Equipment competition for Wyoming high school students. Future winners may qualify to advance to the annual national SkillsUSA competition held each year in Atlanta, Georgia , creating incredible opportunities for Wyoming students to showcase their talents on a national stage.
The future of Wyoming’s heavy civil workforce is bright and getting brighter every day.
