My answer is simple: a competent climber. Plain and simple.
I own these machines, but I don’t operate them. I believe the best operators bring an understanding of tree biology, structure, weight distribution, tension, compression, rigging, and how a tree behaves when you start taking it apart. They understand what a climber sees, what a climber anticipates, and what can go wrong before it happens.
Operating a grapple saw isn’t just about running a crane or moving a joystick. It’s about understanding trees, making good decisions, communicating with the crew, and knowing how to dismantle a tree safely and efficiently.
