Arrowsmith Forge home to studiospace for C Fletcher Coddington, artist-blacksmith. Arrowsmith designs and builds ornamental & architectural iron: gates, grills, sculpture, furniture, chandeliers and lighting. A custom metal shop for 40 years, Arrowsmith created furniture and chandeliers for international corporations, architects and discerning clients as: Pierre Deux, WaterWorks, Brunschwig & Fils

, Portico, Carlton Varney, Stephen Learner Architects and Gil Schaefer. The 90 years combined experience of owners Fletcher and Debra Coddington along with extensive shop-space and facilities enable them to build most anything of metal their clients can dream up. Their newly re-opened pop-up store and galleryspace displays their steel along with a blend of unique gifts from local, European artisans and Fair Market sources.

First Monarch cat (Danaus plexippus) on second year swamp milkw**d (Asclepius incarnata).

I think I’ve got the names right.

Trying to get the scientific names embedded in my stubborn concrete brain…. Can’t ask for the correct plant at a nursery if I don’t know its proper name. Especially since I mostly can’t tell a hybrid from a cultivar from the indigenous native species… amazing how little most nurseries know about what they’re selling. Only way I can think of to get what I want is to know what I’m actually buying.

My mental struggles always remind of Baylin who never was introduced to a plant he forgot.

The planting makes me dream about him as a toddler, dumping the vegetables he gathered into my T shirt held up like a hammock while he chewed on raw corn or beans.

And later on him removing bittersweet from our white pines. Doing it correctly - easily 15 years before anyone else told me best practices…. Bays was there with his paintbrush carefully taking care of poisoning only those roots… doing it several times in a season to ensure it’s demise. His brain like a hungry sponge…

missing him always but maybe even a little more today on this perfect post-rain-sunny Sunday morning.

After 3 1/2 decades in our locaton, Arrowsmith Forge has sold our Mabbettsville facilities. Fletcher is renovating his original shop where he began the business. Offloading the big building will finally allow him the time to develop his own sculpture. And play more...

Meanwhile, we've been actively selling stock, equipment and machinery...

I'll be listing it here and on blacksmithing sites. We've plans for a final in-house sale at the end of January. I'll keep you all in the loop.
